"It looks comical when we see North Korea is helping Russia more than the European Union is for Ukraine."

Hello Team!

Jonathan had to pick up his 13-year-old son from school as he is opening a pop-up ice skating rink in the city next to his. His son will be doing a routine dressed up as the Grinch. Jonathan gave this little window into his life that we didn't need but he gave it to us anyway.

Military Aid

  • Germany will deploy an additional Patriot air defence system in Ukraine in winter. This is likely the one they pulled back from Poland as there is less risk now of Russia doing something bonkers there. Ukraine will eventually have over 8 Patriot batteries which can all be linked together.
  • At the Ramstein meeting, the US made it clear there is no choice between supporting Israel or Ukraine - they stand with both.
  • Ukraine's Ministry of Defence is due to allocate $4.8 billion for shells and missiles in 2024. Artillery is still the god of war and ammunition was a limiting factor in the recent counter-offensive.
  • Ukraine still has not used Abrams tanks and is unlikely to do so before spring, indicating there won't be a counter-offensive before then.
  • A commander of one of the most experienced strike drone companies in Ukraine said one FPV drone crew uses up equipment worth $10,000 per working day, showing the high demand for drones.
  • Russia is trying to increase its own drone production. Dimitry Medvedev visited a drone manufacturing centre in Moscow.
  • China has provided 1,500-2,000 Desert Cross 1003 light all-terrain vehicles to Russia which are being used on the front lines, some with turrets installed. This is a worry.

Geopolitics

  • The Lithuanian Foreign Minister warned that Ukraine's lack of missile systems and ammunition, as well as slow EU decision making, risks forcing Ukraine into a position where it has to sue for peace. Support for Ukraine is showing signs of cracking.
  • India has refused to accept a sanctioned tanker carrying Russian oil, showing a ramping up of sanctions enforcement. Major Greek shipping companies have also stopped transporting Russian crude.
  • A seemingly UK-owned ship carrying stolen Ukrainian grain from Mariupol is actually linked to Russian shipping concerns operating out of Syria. More needs to be done to stop this "dark fleet".
  • A legal report claims Russia's theft of Ukrainian grain is a premeditated war crime, but Jonathan and a guest disagree, believing it was more opportunistic once the "special military operation" turned into a full-scale war.
  • The EU has approved €900 million in advance payments to Hungary to try and overcome their veto on aid to Ukraine.
  • Turkey informed NATO that ratification of Sweden's membership bid will be completed in November.
  • Russian and Chinese companies are reportedly discussing a possible underwater tunnel to Crimea due to fears of further attacks on the Kerch Bridge. Jonathan believes this would be difficult to do in an active warzone.
  • Direct losses to the Ukrainian economy from the blocking of the Polish border by protesting truck drivers has amounted to over €400 million. Jonathan is annoyed that money given to Ukraine is being undermined by these protests which may have Russian influence behind them.
