Mobilised Russians Complain of Poor Treatment
- Mobilised Russians from the Stavropol region are complaining they have been abandoned at a railway station in Western Russia after having to travel at their own expense and not being paid salaries.
- This is a common occurrence since mobilisation began in September last year. It appears Russia is running out of money to properly equip and transport mobilised troops.
- While Russia is desperate for mobilised troops to replace losses, different elements of the military infrastructure don't seem to care about getting them to the front lines properly equipped. This will translate to low morale and troops more likely to surrender.
- The lack of cohesion between desperate mobilisation efforts and poor follow through to get troops to the front highlights major problems in Russia's military compared to the West.
RUSI Report on Ukrainian Counter-Offensive
- The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has released a report scrutinizing the tactical actions and challenges of Ukraine's summer counter-offensive. Key points:
- Subsequent offensives will be needed to fully liberate Ukrainian territory
- Ukraine has achieved artillery dominance by blinding Russian counter-battery capabilities
- Ensuring ammunition sustainability is critical
- Ukraine is suffering heavy equipment losses but Western-supplied vehicles are preventing high personnel losses
- The slow "bite and hold" approach allows Russia to reset defences
- Mine reconnaissance and battalion/brigade staff training are key limitations
- NATO training needs to be adapted to Ukrainian force structure and methods
- Russia is adapting with dispersed EW, new C2 tools and emphasis on precision fires
- Continued Western support is vital for Ukraine to retain initiative into 2024
Debate over Providing Taurus Cruise Missiles
- The chair of Germany's defence committee has criticised Chancellor Scholz for blocking the decision to provide Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
- Reasons for not providing them may include:
- Taurus is not directly compatible with Ukraine's current aircraft and would require adaptation, possibly degrading some functionality
- Germany has a limited stock of around 600 Taurus missiles
- However, Jonathan argues Germany is unlikely to use a large number of Taurus missiles in the near future and could provide a portion of their stock (e.g. 300-500) to Ukraine while replenishing the supply. The missiles were designed to be used against Russia, Germany's biggest current threat.
