🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Personnel Losses and Battlefield Dynamics
🎦 00:30-02:21⏩
- Ukrainian General Staff reported 930 Russian personnel losses in the last 24 hours, bringing the daily total below 1,000, which is lower than recent highs.
- Jonathan suggests this decrease could be due to a lull in fighting, fewer Russian attacks, or potentially poor weather, as there are no obvious extenuating circumstances like peace talks.
- Material losses for Russia were low in some categories: 3 tanks, 2 armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs).
- Artillery systems destroyed dropped to 39 from 88 the previous day, but this is still almost double the daily average.
- A good haul of 4 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) and 1 anti-aircraft warfare system were also destroyed, along with 82 vehicles and fuel tanks.
- Jonathan speculates that the next day's report might include hits on Iskander launchers in Bryansk Oblast.
Overall Russian and Ukrainian Casualty Figures (CSIS Report)
🎦 02:22-06:22⏩
- According to the New York Times, citing the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), nearly one million Russian troops have been killed or wounded since the war began.
- The CSIS study also indicates that close to 400,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed or wounded.
- This places the overall casualty ratio at approximately 1 Ukrainian casualty to 2.5 Russian casualties.
- Jonathan notes that "casualties" include killed, wounded, prisoners of war, and deserted. He speculates that Ukraine likely maintains a better ratio of dead-to-wounded compared to Russia due to superior medical evacuation (Medevac) and casualty evacuation (Kazevac) capabilities.
- The poor Russian Medevac situation means fewer wounded soldiers survive to be treated, increasing their proportion of dead compared to wounded. Ukraine's internal infrastructure also facilitates better medical attention behind front lines.
Zelensky on Global Inaction and Child Victims of Aggression
🎦 06:23-07:31⏩
- Ukrainian President Zelensky stated that if powerful nations fail to stop Putin, they share responsibility for his actions. If they wish to stop him but cannot, Putin will cease to view them as powerful.
- On the International Day of Innocent Children, Victims of Aggression, Zelensky highlighted that Putin interprets insufficient pressure and global inaction as silent approval for further atrocities.
- As of June 4th, 2025, Zelensky reported horrific statistics on Ukrainian children:
- 631 children killed
- Over 1,975 children injured
- 2,244 children missing
- Over 19,000 Ukrainian children forcibly transferred to Russia
- Jonathan expresses outrage, emphasising that these figures must be shared with anyone who still holds sympathy for Russia, as these are the direct consequences of their aggression.
Prisoner Exchange and Russian Negotiation Tactics
🎦 07:31-08:32⏩
- Good news emerged from the Istanbul 2.0 negotiations regarding an upcoming prisoner exchange: a 1200-for-1200 format is planned between June 7th and 9th. This is expected to involve approximately 400 prisoners swapped each day.
- This was one of the few substantive outcomes from the Istanbul talks, confirmed by Medinsky to Putin.
- However, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov accused Ukraine of "provocations" aimed at disrupting negotiations. Jonathan passionately rebuts this, using his "Doris" analogy, stating that victims do not need permission to defend themselves against their aggressor.
Russian and Ukrainian Material Losses (Oryx Analysis)
🎦 08:33-11:46⏩
- Oryx reported 46 Russian equipment losses for June 4th, including 14 valuable aircraft (12 destroyed, 2 damaged), 2 destroyed T-90M tanks (Russia's best), and a Buk launcher air defence system.
- Ukrainian losses for the same period were 27 pieces of equipment, including a couple of Bradleys and a CV-90 abandoned.
- While Russia lost more equipment, the overall ratio is closer to 1:1, a significant change from the earlier phase of the war.
- This shift is partly due to the retaking of Kursk, where Ukraine sustained substantial equipment losses.
- Russia is increasingly using non-traditional combat assets like motorcycles, SUVs, and quads due to a shortage of heavy mobility vehicles. Jonathan shares footage of drone strikes on these vehicles in the Prokofiev direction.
- These non-traditional vehicles are not counted by Oryx (though Andrew Perpetua did in his past analyses), which skews the reported loss ratios.
- Paradoxically, the Russians have discovered advantages to motorcycle attacks, such as easier navigation over minefields and increased speed, making them harder targets for drones compared to a single armoured fighting vehicle (IFV).
CSIS Report on Russian Equipment Erosion and NATO Intelligence on Offensives
🎦 11:47-14:41⏩
- A report by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) highlights that while the Kremlin is willing to absorb high attrition in terms of personnel, the sustained disproportionate loss rate of equipment significantly erodes its capacity to generate fresh, high-quality formations for decisive breakthroughs.
- NATO intelligence, according to a senior official cited in Ukraine's Kupravda, sees no signs of a major Russian offensive being prepared in the Sumy or Dnipropetrovsk regions, despite previous rumours from some Ukrainians.
- While Russia has increased activity, there are no indications of large-scale preparations for a major offensive. Jonathan suggests this aligns with the CSIS report, implying that Russia lacks the necessary equipment for such breakthroughs due to its heavy losses.
Historical Analysis of Equipment Loss Ratios
🎦 14:42-18:13⏩
- Jonathan presents a graph illustrating the ratio of equipment losses throughout the war. A 1:1 ratio (dotted line) means both sides are losing the same number of vehicles; historically, Russia has always lost more.
- Early 2022 (Beginning of War): Russia lost an immense amount of equipment during their initial attacks into Ukraine, with long columns getting stuck in mud, while Ukraine used fewer vehicles.
- 2023-2024 (Drone Effectiveness): Drones became highly effective for Ukraine. After Ukraine's May counter-offensive, Ukraine started losing more equipment as they were attacking, bringing the ratio down to 1:2.
- Avdiivka Attacks: When Russia went on the offensive in Avdiivka, committing columns of 30+ vehicles, they were "banjaxed," and the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian losses soared to 1:4 or even 1:5. Jonathan calls this a "purple patch" for Ukraine, as Russia committed "military harakiri."
- Retaking of Kursk: This period saw a significant decline in Ukraine's favour, with the ratio dropping to approximately 1:1.6.
- Despite the fluctuating ratios, Jonathan stresses that, in real terms, Russia is running low on equipment.
US Sanctions Bill Pause and Russian Funding Issues
- A key analysis indicates that secondary sanctions against Russia could reduce Kremlin oil revenues by 20%, while only raising US gasoline prices by 15 cents per gallon. This suggests the United States holds significant leverage, but is "refusing to play them."
- Jonathan expresses dismay that Donald Trump reportedly asked the Senate to pause the sanctions bill, following a phone call with Putin.
- He believes such sanctions would severely impact Russia's ability to generate money and, consequently, equipment for the war.
- Further evidence of Russia's financial strain includes a Russian politician suggesting that oligarchs should contribute to the "Special Military Operation" (SMO).
- Jonathan also points to structural economic problems in Russia, such as issues with the national airline Aeroflot and massive 20% budgetary cuts to science and industry. He suggests that had the Trump administration applied pressure earlier, Russia would be in a far worse economic state.
Russian Missile Strike on Ukrainian Training Site
🎦 19:27-20:21⏩
- On June 4th, Russian forces conducted a missile strike on a training unit in the Poltava region.
- Several Ukrainian service members were wounded and are receiving medical assistance.
- Crucially, unlike a previous incident where 12 soldiers died, there were no reported fatalities in this strike, which Jonathan notes is a better outcome.
- A special commission has been established to investigate the incident.
Effectiveness of Ukrainian Units and Artillery Destruction
🎦 20:21-22:20⏩
- Jonathan highlights the significant impact of specific Ukrainian units, such as the "Krile Do Pekla" unit in the Sumy region, which destroyed 15 Russian guns in just two days.
- This individual unit's performance helps explain how the Ukrainian General Staff can report high daily artillery destruction numbers (e.g., 88 recently, 39 today), as these reports compile evidence from various successful engagements across the vast 1,100km front line.
- Other reported strikes include drone attacks on Russian motorcycles and electric scooters in the Prokofiev direction, and an AASM hammer strike on a Russian position in Kursk, resulting in significant explosions from guided glide bombs.
Iskander Launch Site Strike in Bryansk Oblast
🎦 22:20-24:16⏩
- The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) achieved another success with a strike in Bryansk Oblast, north of Ukraine, targeting an Iskander ballistic missile launch site near Klintsy.
- The 26th Russian Missile Brigade was reportedly preparing to launch an attack, possibly on Kyiv.
- Ukrainian forces, acting on intelligence, successfully struck the area: one Iskander launcher was destroyed in an explosion, and two others were likely damaged.
- Jonathan praises this as "excellent" news, emphasising the importance of destroying ballistic missile launchers, which are a "scourge of Ukraine." He notes the SBU is having a "fantastic week."
Operation Spiderweb Airbase Strikes and US Reactions
- Further details on Ukraine's "Operation Spiderweb" drone attack on Russian airbases indicate significant success. The US assesses that as many as 20 Russian warplanes were hit, with around 10 destroyed. The SBU had initially claimed 41 drones.
- US officials described the attack as "highly significant." While one cautioned it could lead to a more severe Russian negotiating position, Jonathan dismisses this concern, arguing Ukraine must fight back.
- Crucially, at the time of the attack, KH-101 cruise missiles were already mounted under the wings of some Tupolev Tu-95 bombers, indicating they were preparing for an imminent strike.
- This preemptive strike prevented a planned "Zeus lightning" operation, which would have flooded Ukrainian skies with cruise missiles, saving "countless Ukrainian lives."
Critique of Patrick Bet-David's Comments on Ukrainian Attacks
🎦 26:29-27:21⏩
- Jonathan expresses strong indignation at comments made by Patrick Bet-David, an army veteran and insurance mogul, who questioned: "Who gave Zelensky the authority to attack Russia?"
- Jonathan vehemently states that Zelensky does not need permission to defend Ukraine from an invasion. He reiterates his "Doris" analogy, comparing it to someone not needing permission to hit back at an attacker.
- He criticises Bet-David for his lack of understanding, despite his prominent platform, particularly for suggesting that Ukraine cannot conduct military operations without external backing.
Analysis of A-50 Aircraft Damage and Russian Disinformation
🎦 27:21-31:10⏩
- Analysing new footage, Jonathan notes that two A-50 early warning and control aircraft that were struck appeared to be non-operational (one lacked engines, only one had tires on top).
- The drones hit the dome, which is considered the least important and most easily repairable part. Jonathan believes this resulted in minimal damage, suggesting these A-50s were likely being used for spare parts rather than being active assets.
- Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, claimed the aircraft were merely "damaged" and "will be restored," a statement Jonathan found "hilarious" and clearly contradicted by satellite imagery showing planes that "internally combusted" and were "properly destroyed."
Inconsistent US Reactions to Ukrainian Deep Strikes
🎦 31:10-31:57⏩
- Jonathan highlights the glaring inconsistencies in General Keith Kellogg's public statements regarding Ukrainian deep strikes into Russia.
- In November 2024 (around election time), Kellogg advocated for Ukraine to strike deep into Russia, asserting that "Putin will not use nukes."
- However, after recent Ukrainian deep strikes on June 1st, 2025, Kellogg expressed concern, stating, "I'm concerned about Ukraine's deep strikes in Russia. Don't know what Russia will do. Undefined risk levels are going up."
- Jonathan finds this flip-flop "absolutely ridiculous," pointing out the hypocrisy of advising such actions then expressing alarm when they occur.
Trump's Reaction to Drone Attack and Russian Influence on his Comms
- Axios reported that Donald Trump privately described Ukraine's recent drone attack as "strong" and "badass," viewing Ukraine as a "chihuahua inflicting some real damage on a much bigger dog."
- However, Trump later posted on True Social, mentioning a discussion about "the attack on Russia's docked airplanes." Jonathan and others found the term "docked airplanes" peculiar for English, as airplanes are "grounded," while ships are "docked."
- Further investigation revealed that this phrase makes sense if translated backwards from Russian, where the word for "grounded" can also mean "docked," and airplanes are sometimes referred to as "ships."
- The True Social post, which lacked Trump's usual capitalisation, was also mysteriously deleted and re-uploaded unchanged. Jonathan raises concerns about potential Russian influence on Trump's communications, questioning if Russians are providing phrases and statements that are then directly used in his social media posts, which he finds "very worrying."
Russian Overnight Missile and Drone Strikes on Ukraine
🎦 36:18-37:12⏩
- Last night, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine, deploying 103 drones and one ballistic missile, targeting Chernihiv.
- Ukrainian air defences managed to neutralise 74 of the drones (28 shot down, 46 jammed).
- However, approximately 30 drones still got through, hitting 16 locations. Jonathan notes a consistent pattern of around a third of Russian drones successfully penetrating Ukrainian defences.
Barbaric Strikes on Kherson City Administration and Civilians
- Kherson City continues to suffer relentless daily attacks, with FPV drones actively hunting civilians and guided glide bombs striking the city centre.
- The Kherson Regional Administration Building was hit by a guided bomb, sustaining significant damage, including the iconic masonry of the Ukrainian trident.
- Jonathan describes these as "barbaric" and "utterly unacceptable strikes on civilian infrastructure." He expresses frustration that such horrors, which would be major international news if they happened elsewhere, are being normalised and are not receiving sufficient global attention, particularly from figures like Donald Trump.
Zelensky's Condemnation of Russian Terror and Civilian Casualties
🎦 39:05-42:17⏩
- President Zelensky delivered a powerful statement on the recent Russian strikes, highlighting a particularly tragic incident in Pryluky, Chernihiv region. A Shahid drone struck a rescuer's home, killing his wife, daughter, and one-year-old grandson, marking the 632nd child fatality of the full-scale war.
- Zelensky condemned the previous night's attack by 103 drones and one ballistic missile across multiple regions (Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipro, Kherson).
- He asserted that Russia constantly seeks to buy time to continue its killings, and its aggression escalates when it does not face strong global condemnation and pressure.
- Zelensky called for maximum sanctions and collective pressure, stating that the war can only end through strength, and Moscow must be "gradually deprived of its ability to continue this aggression." He concluded by reiterating that if the world's powerful do not stop Putin, they share responsibility, and if they cannot, Putin will cease to see them as powerful.
Russian Strikes on Odesa and US Embassy Warnings
🎦 42:17-44:11⏩
- Odesa was targeted by 25 drones in the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district, damaging civilian infrastructure, including a family medicine clinic, a school, and a youth creativity centre. Jonathan calls this "willful civilian destruction" and a "repetitive terror against civilians."
- Jonathan reveals that his anticipation of major Russian strikes was prompted by the US Embassy in Kyiv urging US citizens to exercise caution. He notes that the US Embassy's warnings have historically been accurate, indicating that the US possesses intelligence regarding Russian strike plans.
Ukrainian Strikes into Russia and Occupied Territories
🎦 44:11-46:27⏩
- Heavy Ukrainian drone attacks occurred overnight across several Russian oblasts, including Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, and Rostov, as well as occupied territories in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea.
- Milierovo airbase was reportedly heavily targeted, though the outcome is unknown.
- Occupied parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia experienced blackouts due to strikes on power substations, particularly in Melitopol and Unohudar.
- An explosion also occurred on railway tracks in the Voronezh region, attributed to partisan activity.
- Jonathan notes that while Ukrainian attacks are frequent and widespread, there is very little first-hand evidence of their achievements, making it difficult to assess the full extent of their success beyond consistent electricity blackouts in occupied areas.
Zelensky Considers Allowing Private Military Companies
🎦 48:00-50:40⏩
- President Zelensky indicated he might consider allowing the creation of private armies (mercenaries) in Ukraine. This statement was a direct reaction to a point in Russia's latest "ultimatum," which demanded Ukraine eliminate "nationalist formations and private military companies."
- Zelensky highlighted Russia's hypocrisy, as Ukraine currently has no private armed groups under its law (e.g., Azov is part of the National Guard), while Russia openly operates private military companies like Wagner and Gazprom's PMCs, despite them being technically illegal under Russian law.
- Russia's unrealistic demands in its memorandum also included Ukraine's neutral status, a ban on military alliances and Western aid, and official recognition of annexed territories (Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia), even though parts of these regions remain under Ukrainian control.
Senegal Citizen Recruited to Russian Army
- Jonathan shares details of an interview with Malik Diop, a Senegalese citizen. Diop, a student in Moscow, was reportedly coerced into joining the Russian army.
- He was promised significant money and a non-combat role (cooking), but was subsequently deployed to the front line at Toretsk. Jonathan describes the interview as "quite revealing" about Russian recruitment practices.
Ramifications of Operation Spiderweb - Russian Logistics and Intelligence Breach
🎦 51:38-53:12⏩
- "Operation Spiderweb" has led to significant logistical disruptions in Russia, with huge truck lines forming across the country as each vehicle is meticulously checked for drones and other potential threats. This has caused economic problems for Russia.
- In another intelligence success, Ukrainian GUR cyber specialists successfully attacked the resources of the Russian Tupolev Design Bureau, a key manufacturer of strategic aviation (Tu-22M, Tu-95).
- Intelligence gained over 4.4 gigabytes of secret information, including official correspondence, personnel data, and meeting minutes. Jonathan notes that such a volume of raw data can be extremely useful, implying that "there is nothing secret left" for Russia.
Ukrainian Military Leadership Changes and Drone Force Strategy
- Zelensky has accepted the resignation of General Drapak as commander of the ground forces. Drapak will now solely focus on commanding strategic group Kortitsia on the front line, which he was already doing concurrently. Jonathan notes Drapak is a well-respected figure and this move seems to allow him to concentrate on frontline operations.
- A Russian blogger, Philologist, expressed concern about the new head of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, Magyar, and his connection with GUR head, Budanov. The blogger views this connection as "very dangerous," praising Ukraine's "very effective military management" and the successful public-private partnership of "Programme Brave One."
- The Russian blogger acknowledges that Ukrainian deep strikes aim to undermine Russian logistics, reduce military potential, and create "psychosis" within their "ossified command structures." He fears this, combined with Ukraine's "drone line concept," could create preconditions for a deep offensive operation, given Russia's slow pace of qualitative transformations in its armed forces.
Magyar's Vision for Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces (First 100 Days)
- Robert Brovdy Magyar, the new commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces (SBS), outlined an ambitious plan for his first 100 days, which Jonathan describes as a "frickin' mission" by someone who "knows what he's doing":
- Effectiveness: Aims to have 6-7 SBS drone line units rank in the top 10 of all Ukrainian drone units for effectiveness.
- Unified System: Implement a single electronic system for planning, analysis, coordination, management, and online reporting with automatic result verification across all SBS drone line units operating at the front.
- Ammunition Production: Increase operational ammunition production so that "ammunition awaits the pilots, not the other way around," ensuring pilots are never waiting for supplies.
- Supply Chain: Create a single supply warehouse for critical components (e.g., Starlink, drone batteries, mobile electronic warfare, FPV and bomber customisation, power banks, pickups) to ensure timely provision to units.
- Logistics: Mentions "NRC logistics ground robotic complexes," which Jonathan presumes refers to Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs).
- Personnel Optimisation: Revise and optimise emergency response, retrain inexperienced crews, and conduct an "audit of dead souls" (non-combat personnel avoiding duty).
- Strategic Depth: Focus on the "sensitive" topic of using drones for strategic depth, the priorities for which are determined but not detailed publicly.
- Innovation: Establish an R&D Centre for innovation and development, transforming existing centres from brigade to branch level support.
- Jonathan views this as a highly professional and exacting approach, aiming to streamline and enhance Ukraine's drone capabilities significantly, with the state providing drones to specialised units.
Ukraine's US Minerals Deal, French Mirage Jets and World of Tanks
- Ukraine's Parliament has passed budget code changes to implement the US minerals deal, a significant step in bilateral cooperation.
- In a show of support, French Mirage jets flew a flight path over the Black Sea that visually depicted the Ukrainian Trident, which Jonathan called "absolutely awesome."
- The Moscow City Court declared Leicester Games and its founder, Malik Khatazheyev, along with Wargaming (the company behind "World of Tanks") founder Viktor Kisly, as "members of an extremist organization." All assets of Leicester Games were confiscated.
- This verdict was issued because the founders reportedly donated ambulances to Ukraine, prompting Jonathan to quip about playing "World of Tanks" as an act of defiance against Moscow, despite his frustration with encountering players using Russian flags on European servers.
Zelensky's Call for Global Action and Consequences for Aggression
- Zelensky delivered a powerful address, revealing the staggering scale of Russian attacks since the beginning of the year (less than six months): nearly 27,700 aerial bombs, 11,200 Shahid drones, 9,000 other attack drones, and over 700 missiles (including ballistic ones).
- He emphasised that Russia has deliberately maintained this tempo since the full-scale invasion, restructuring its entire state, society, and economy for mass killings with impunity.
- Zelensky lamented that numerous talks with Russia have failed to bring peace or halt the war, asserting that Putin feels "impunity" and is preparing further "responses."
- He argues that every new strike and diplomatic delay signifies Russia giving "the finger to the entire world" and those who hesitate to increase pressure.
- Zelensky stressed that Russia should be the one seeking peace and must be made to feel the high cost of war. He warned that if the world reacts weakly, Putin interprets it as "silent permission" for new atrocities.
- He concluded by reminding "the powerful of this world" on the Day of Remembrance of Ukrainian Children Killed by Russian Aggression: "If the powerful do not stop Putin, it means they share responsibility with him. And if they want to stop him but cannot, then Putin will no longer see them as powerful." Jonathan interprets this as a direct message to Donald Trump and the US.
