- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.

Overall, a 4:1 loss ratio (Russia: Ukraine) is reported, although Jonathan is keen to point out that the value of Ukrainian losses is much higher, with confirmation that a Ukrainian M1 Abrams has been abandoned and is likely to have been destroyed. Other Ukrainian losses include a damaged Archer howitzer, a Bradley IFV and a P-18 radar.

Ukraine shoots down Russian Su-34 fighter jet - 27th February

Jonathan reports that Ukraine has shot down a Russian Su-34 fighter jet in the Donbas region. Jonathan believes that Russia is stepping up the use of guided glide bombs and these are proving very effective. The Ukrainians are alive to this and Jonathan believes Ukraine is likely to deploy its air defence systems closer to the front lines to counter this, despite the risk to these systems. This is a risk they will be willing to take as these aircraft are causing significant troop and equipment losses. Destroying Russian aircraft will mean that these guided bombs cannot be deployed.

Ukrainian modified Sikh drones destroying Russian equipment

Jonathan reports that modified Sikh drones are being used by Ukraine to destroy Russian equipment. Initially used only for reconnaissance, these drones can now be used as loitering munitions and have been credited with destroying over £100m of Russian equipment.

Overnight missile and drone attacks (26th-27th Feb) - Khmelnytskyi targeted again

Jonathan reports that Russia attacked Ukraine overnight with drones and missiles. 11 out of 13 Shahed drones were destroyed by Ukrainian air defences. Ukraine has developed its own version of the Shahed drone and is now producing these at scale. Jonathan speculates about the number of Storm Shadow missiles that the UK has supplied to Ukraine, expressing his frustration that the UK has ceased production. Explosions were reported in the Khmelnytskyi region, likely targeting Starokostyantyniv airbase. Jonathan speculates that Ukraine will need to develop hardened shelters to protect its airframes.

Explosions in Belgorod, Sevastopol and Makiivka

Loud explosions reported in Belgorod, Russia. It is thought that Russian air defences may have been activated and that debris may have fallen in a populated area. Three construction workers are reported to have died after a drone struck their car. Explosions also reported in Sevastopol, Crimea and Makiivka in the Donetsk region.

Ukraine developing offensive and defensive strategies

Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valery Zaluzhnyi has admitted that the counter-offensive did not go to plan but that Ukraine had been very successful in attriting Russian forces. Jonathan believes that Ukraine was caught off guard when Russia went on the offensive as this had not been anticipated and the Ukrainians were not as well prepared as they could have been. Jonathan recounts his observations from his recent trip to Ukraine where he noticed that defensive fortifications were being prepared in areas that he would not have anticipated. He speculates that perhaps the Ukrainians had not anticipated needing to defend these areas.

Rumours of Navalny prisoner swap before his death

Russians respond to war crimes allegations with fake video
