"I very much doubt that Putin is willing to accept something less than the Donbass, which he sort of titularly claimed as the original goals of this entire invasion, even though we clearly know that it was actually about taking control of Ukraine."
Hello Team!
Jonathan had to restart the video after realizing he hadn't pressed record for the first 30 minutes. He was gutted about wasting half an hour of his life that he'll never get back.

Typhoon fighter jets not suitable for Ukraine
- Justin Bronk, an air defense expert at RUSI, argues that the UK's Eurofighter Typhoon jets are not suitable for Ukraine
- The RAF has too few serviceable Tranche 1 Typhoons (20-25) with limited combat capabilities
- Typhoons are not optimized for the low-altitude warfare required in Ukraine due to Russian SAM threats
- Typhoons cannot operate from Ukraine's dispersed, short, rough air bases
- The RAF is already overstretched with inadequate spares and munitions
- Providing Typhoons would be mostly symbolic rather than practical, but could enable other countries like Sweden (Gripen) or another party (F-18) to supply jets
Injured Russian soldier's desperate video
A distressing video shows:
- A badly injured Russian soldier under heavy artillery fire
- He says they got into a "brutal bloodbath" and were "properly beaten"
- He's unsure if it's Russian or Ukrainian artillery, suggesting friendly fire incidents
- With no help coming, he holds up a grenade as his "last remaining argument"
- He says "Love you all" and that they "got busted hard"
The video provides insight into the desperation and terrible reality of war, and suggests Russians are taking a beating in some places and may be hit by their own artillery.

Naftali Bennett interview and peace deal claims
- An interview with former Israeli PM Naftali Bennett went viral with claims the US blocked a Russia-Ukraine peace deal
- However, this was a mistranslation - Bennett said the US "stopped" peace talks, not "blocked" an agreement
- Bennett noted allies disagreed a peace deal was a good idea in March 2022, but all were aware of his mediation efforts
- He clarified it was Russia's Bucha massacre war crimes that ended any peace talks, not the US
- The reality is there likely wasn't a deal to be made, and third parties like the US couldn't veto an agreement anyway
Calling out false balance in war crimes reporting
In response to a comment criticizing Jonathan for not covering Ukrainian war crimes:
- War crimes are terrible and should be investigated, but focusing equally on a handful of Ukrainian crimes vs. 50,000+ Russian ones is "false balance"
- Giving equal coverage to both sides is misleading - the scale and systematic nature of Russian war crimes is far greater
- Laws like the Geneva Conventions are open to interpretation and war crimes can involve complex calculations
- Hitting a Russian oil refinery is arguably acceptable given Russia's attacks on civilian infrastructure
- Ukraine is being careful not to hit Russia too much to avoid provoking the Russian public
Mobilization, force preservation and offensive preparations
Key points from War on the Rocks podcast with Michael Kofman and Ryan Evans:
- Ukraine no longer has a manpower advantage due to Russian mobilization and wartime measures
- Both sides seem to be preserving their best troops for upcoming offensives rather than the Bakhmut meat grinder
- Putin likely wants to take all of Donbas at minimum, but Russian forces will struggle given Ukrainian defenses
- The best Russia can likely achieve is a stalemate close to current lines, but even taking Donetsk is doubtful
- Ultimately, the side with the biggest economy (Ukraine + NATO allies) will likely win the war
Debunking "NATO provoked Putin" arguments
Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul shared quotes showing Putin and Medvedev's past openness to NATO:
- In 2000, Putin said he did not rule out Russia joining NATO and had difficulty imagining NATO as an enemy
- After NATO's second wave of expansion, Putin said Russia cannot forbid nations from increasing their security through NATO
- In 2008, Putin said the decision for Ukraine to join NATO is a matter for Ukraine and NATO alone
- In 2010, Medvedev said at a NATO summit that Russia viewed the future with optimism and would develop relations with NATO
These "inconvenient facts" undermine arguments that NATO provoked or threatened Russia.

First Russian "Terminator" tank support vehicle destroyed
- The first confirmed kill of Russia's "Terminator" tank support vehicle, which had appeared in several videos, was reported
- The BMP Terminator's destruction is a PR blow for Russia and a success for Ukraine
Wrap up
- Jonathan is writing an article examining evidence for who sabotaged the Nord Stream pipelines
- Based on his analysis so far, he believes the US had more to gain than Russia, but is open to arguments and focused on evidence rather than ramifications
- He ran out of time to cover a final topic on Elon Musk and Starlink, but will address it in the next video
