"This is just absolutely, oh, by the way, I don't even know anything about this guy, this musician that's got to the top of the charts and loads of kind of pro-Tucker Republicans saying this is amazing because of, I don't know, he's come out and done a video saying his song was used in the Republican nominee debate. And he came out and did a video and said, by the way, the song was written about those people. It was a real long goal for the Republican nominees and the people who are like this guy that I assume is shouting about this guy. He's like, that song was written directly against those people on that stage."
Hello Team!
Jonathan introduces the second part of the Ukraine War News Update for 29th August 2023.

Frontline Update
- Not a great deal of activity on the frontline, possibly due to the fog of war or troops pausing to refit and resupply before attacking again.
- Andrew Perpetua's mapping shows:
- Ukrainian advance south of Kramina, pushing back the Russian line of control in the forest area.
- Increased Ukrainian control around Novodonetsk in the south by Velyka Novosilka.
- Footage from a few days ago showed Ukrainian success with combined arms north of Bakhmut by Zaliznyanske. Perpetua will be monitoring this area closely for Ukrainian gains.
- Maxim Zhorin, Deputy Commander of the 3rd Assault Brigade, said a key task in Bakhmut is maintaining advance momentum to prevent Russia fortifying defences as they have in Zaporizhzhia. Constant Ukrainian attacks are preventing this so far.
- Ukrainian units continue to advance towards Verbove in the south. A Russian mil-blogger called it a "very dangerous situation" for Russia there.
Military Aid
- The Pentagon is against providing Ukraine with ATACMS missiles due to concerns over undermining its own combat readiness for a potential future conflict with China. However, there is growing support for providing longer-range cluster munitions for MLRS.
- South Korea will provide $394 million aid to Ukraine in 2024 ($98m for restoration, $98m through international organisations, $196m humanitarian aid). However, South Korea ranks low among democracies for aid to Ukraine but high for weapon sales. Its policy prohibits lethal aid to countries at war.
- Germany has proposed Greece hand over 100 Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine in exchange for modernised armoured vehicles, possibly Leopard 1s from Italian stocks. This could mean 400-500 Leopard 1 hulls going to Ukraine, a very useful addition.
- The EU lacks translators to train the Ukrainian military. English competency is needed first for things like F-16 training.
- Ukraine has showed off new unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) including remote turrets and kamikaze drones. These have many battlefield applications.
Geopolitics
- Czech PM Petr Fiala believes the scenario of the war in Ukraine freezing is becoming more likely as chances for a quick resolution diminish. The West seems to be preparing for a longer conflict with multi-year aid packages to Ukraine.
- Putin has told India's PM Modi he will not attend the G20 summit in Delhi, despite India not being party to the Rome Statute obliging arrest of those indicted by the ICC. Putin's pariah status reflects Russia's deteriorating position since invading Ukraine.
- In Australia, there are calls to arrest Russian diplomat Simeon Boikov for inciting terrorism and violence against Australian commercial drone maker Sypac and PM Albanese. His diplomatic immunity is being abused.
- Japan's PM will hold talks with Zelenskyy today.
- Tucker Carlson's father is a lobbyist for Hungary, whose leader Viktor Orban opposes military aid to Ukraine, has blocked/delayed EU sanctions on Russia and is pushing for a ceasefire. Carlson has platformed "Colonel" Douglas Macgregor to spread misinformation about Ukraine, as comprehensively debunked by Ryan McBeth. This risks real-world consequences in aiding Russia and costing Ukrainian lives. Modern Russia remains an unreconstructed imperial entity.
