Ukraine Conflict: Full Frontline Update

Jonathan provides an update on the Ukraine frontline for December 5th, 2023. He thanks JR for doing most of the mapping updates. There has been a lot of map movement in different places that the mappers tend to agree on.

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND

Northern Border Activity

• Ukrainian sabotage groups representing themselves as the Russian Volunteer Legion conducted a cross-border raid into Belgorod Oblast, killing an FSB lieutenant colonel
• Russian recon groups have become more active along the Chernihiv border north of Kyiv

Kupyansk, Svatove, Kreminna Axis

• Russian forces continue unsuccessful assaults northeast of Kupyansk with artillery and airstrikes
• Increased Russian concern over Ukrainian forces in Dvorichna area across the Oskil River
• Ukrainian longer range FPV drones targeting Russian self-propelled guns
• Increased Russian long-range artillery towards southeast Kupyansk villages
• Situation remains consistent around Yahidne with Ukrainian FPV drones making 10km+ incursions on Russian MLRS platforms
• MLRS only 10km from front line, less than half its range, implying targeting positions closer to Kupyansk or similar range issues as seen with SPGs
• Claims that half of Synkivka is under Russian control are not confirmed by other analysts
• Russia continues air and drone strikes west and southwest of Kreminna with limited gains towards the Zherebets River and Terny
• Minimal Russian gains in forest area southwest of Kreminna
• Ukrainian forces demonstrating ability to use FPV drones on main highway out of Kreminna

Bakhmut Area

• Russian advances north of Bakhmut in Bohdanivka area forcing Ukrainian withdrawal to trench system adjacent to road towards Chasiv Yar
• Small Russian advances around pond north of Bohdanivka
• Mappers agree on Russian gains in this high ground area overlooking Bakhmut which is a worry for Ukraine as they may lose their advantage
• Russian gains to the southeast of Bakhmut going past original lines from May 30th
• Soledar maps and Deep State map agree on Russian progress along high ground to the back of Klishchiivka
• This high ground offers views over Klishchiivka for snipers, mortars, tanks
• Russians creeping closer to Ukrainian trench network along the ridge which would be a prize
• Russians trying mechanized assaults along the line again with more success
• Ukrainians walked back a small area north of railway line by Klishchiivka
• Russians closing gap between railway and their positions although Suriyat Maps has them in full control of the line as it goes around Klishchiivka

Avdiivka Area

• Russian army took control over forest west of Avdiivka Coke Plant with clashes taking place to the north
• Conflicting claims over situation in Avdiivka over last 24 hours
• Mappers agree on Russian success around water treatment plant
• Claims Russia has crossed railway and holds positions west of it but not confirmed
• Video evidence of Ukrainian counterattacks using tanks, helicopters near Stepove with heavy Russian losses
• Kenneth Gregg, a Finnish fighter in Ukraine, claims Russian attacks have peaked and grey zone is shrinking in Ukraine's favour from Stepove to Krasnohorivka, but this is not supported by mappers
• Large scale Russian attempt to capture Avdiivka Coke Plant defeated by Ukraine this morning according to some sources
• Russians likely using infantry to storm the complex Coke Plant structure rather than vehicles
• Tanks were apparently used by Russia and are burning, likely easy targets for Ukrainian ATGM teams in the tall buildings
• Smell of burning dead Russians has become familiar in Avdiivka air
• Ukrainians are counterattacking in the north but Russians have advantage in numbers
• Small Ukrainian gains around Pisky area

Southern Front - Zaporizhzhia & Kherson Regions

• UK Defence Intelligence says Russia grinding out more ground in Marinka with not much left of the town
• Claims Russians marginally advanced northwest of Staromaiorske but no evidence to confirm
• Russian gains north of Vodyane in Zaporizhzhia region according to Deep State and Suriyat maps
• Pushing and shoving north of Vodyane where Ukrainians were doing well but seems to have petered out
• Russians now claimed to be on offensive in Zaporizhzhia, a change in momentum, with heavy losses on both sides
• Russians recaptured positions northwest of Vodyane according to Suriyat maps
• Russian sources report Ukrainian suppression of Russian air defenses is so good that Bayraktar TB2 drones have reappeared over Kherson battlefield
• If true, this indicates Russian air defenses have been degraded which is an issue for them
• Neither side has advanced around Krynky island area southwest of Kherson city
• Ukrainians advanced south of Krynky through forest area but were repelled back to original positions
• Difficult for either side in this area which is a worry for Ukraine
