Jonathan starts with his usual review of the daily losses for the Russians according to Ukrainian figures. He notes an uptick in personnel losses to 850 but a downtick in equipment losses. Footage is shown of a large number of destroyed Russian vehicles, illustrating how these high loss figures are realistic.

- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Military Aid
- NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg asked South Korea to reconsider its policy of not providing military aid to countries at war and start supplying arms to Ukraine.
- The US has decided not to transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine at this time, though some European countries like the Netherlands are open to it if a formal request is made. The debate around fighter jets for Ukraine is likely to continue.
- The UK confirmed Challenger tanks will arrive in Ukraine by May. Ukrainian tank crews have already begun training in the UK.
- Denmark is donating all 19 of its CAESAR self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine, a significant contribution. Jonathan argues more countries should follow this example and provide Ukraine everything it needs to win the war quickly.
- France and Australia will jointly supply Ukraine with 155mm artillery shells.
Corruption and Sanctions
- Ukraine moved up from 122nd to 116th place in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index for 2022, while Russia moved down to 137th. Ukraine has made progress on corruption since 2013 while Russia has become more corrupt.
- Iran and Russia have connected their banking systems and launched an alternative to SWIFT for trade, involving over 800 banks. Jonathan questions how Russia can justify close ties with Iran and North Korea.
Wagner Defector
A 26-year old former Wagner mercenary who fought in Ukraine described the lack of tactics and ruthless treatment of recruits he witnessed before defecting to Norway in a daring escape. He alleges Wagner is not paying promised compensation to families of fighters killed in action, instead just declaring them missing. The brutal execution of another Wagner defector on camera emboldened him to leave. He predicts the Russian propaganda will eventually stop working and the people will rise up against their leaders.
