"I don't know if it's worth it for the Russians in that area."
Hello Team!
Jonathan provides an update on the Ukraine war frontlines for 18th October 2023. Before diving into the map, he shares that Ukrainian soldiers have destroyed another Su-25 in the Tavria direction, the 4th in a week, which is a significant loss for the Russians.

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND
Northeast Sector - Kupyansk to Svatove to Kreminna Axis
- Near Kupyansk, the pro-Russian Rybar mapping previously showed Russians further forward and Sinkivka partially encircled, but has been walking this back.
- Geolocated footage shows Russian forces have advanced 1.5km west of Yahidne towards Ivanovka.
- Russians are concentrating near Sinkivka, Nadia and Nevske Stelmakovka, building up to consolidate positions before challenging weather conditions.
- Ukrainians have had some success in the Sinkivka area.
Bakhmut Area
Very little change around Bakhmut. The ISW says geolocated footage does not actually indicate Ukrainian advances northwest of Zalichne. A Ukrainian military observer claimed Ukrainian forces broke through Russian defences north of Klishchiivka. Russians are counterattacking near Kurdyumivka and transferring reserves to the area.

Avdiivka
Activity has calmed down after a week of attacks. Russians continue offensives with the same results - columns of equipment destroyed before reaching their goals. Russians are losing the counter-battery fight and need to hide in foxholes. They are struggling to advance further due to Ukrainian defences, despite some tactical successes in the south near Vodyane and Opytne.

Vuhledar/Velyka Novosilka Area
- Fairly quiet, not much to report.
- Rybar maps show sizable Russian gains west of Velyka Novosilka but this is not confirmed by other sources.
- Ukrainians claim to have advanced 1km west of Vodyane but this is also not verified.
Kherson - Antonivsky Bridge Area
There are unconfirmed Russian claims that Ukrainian forces have established a bridgehead on the east (left) bank of the Dnipro river near the Antonivsky bridge, liberating the village of Poyma and continuing to advance. A railway bridge to Oleshky was targeted, possibly by Russians in response. However, there is no clear evidence of this yet beyond the destroyed bridge, so the claims should be treated cautiously. Ukraine has not confirmed it. If true, it could be a precursor to a larger Ukrainian offensive across the Dnipro, but would be very challenging.

Wrap Up
Jonathan notes it's unclear if a left-bank offensive would be worth the cost to Ukraine in troops and equipment. He plugs an upcoming live stream on a different channel discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict and the challenges with bias when covering that topic. The stream will be in a new co-streaming format.
