Kupyansk-Svatove Front

Jonathan notes that this is the first village Russia has captured for months but that it doesn't offer any new avenues of approach for Russian forces. Jonathan suspects that this area of the front is not strategically important to Ukraine and that ceding territory here to the Russians may be a strategic decision. Jonathan discusses the difficulties faced by both sides in this sector, particularly given the topography and the attritional nature of the fighting.

Avdiivka-Donetsk City Front

Jonathan reports that the situation around Avdiivka has deteriorated, with Russian forces breaking through Ukrainian lines and advancing into the city proper. Geolocated footage shows Russian forces fighting in the streets of Avdiivka and Ukrainian sources are reporting that they have had to retreat. Jonathan expresses concern at this development, noting that the loss of Avdiivka would be a significant blow to Ukraine. He is concerned that Russian forces are making progress in an area which was thought to be well-defended. He notes that Ukrainian sources are blaming a lack of ammunition and reinforcements for the losses. Jonathan feels that the capture of Avdiivka would make re-taking the area extremely costly and difficult, comparing the situation to Bakhmut. Jonathan reflects on the US$61 billion of military aid provided to Ukraine and wonders if this situation would have arisen if it had been received sooner.

Donetsk Oblast Frontline Update

Jonathan reports that there have been some small Russian advances south of Marinka towards Heorhiivka. He also reports that there have been some Russian gains in the Velyka Novosilka area, specifically around Urozhaine. However, Jonathan points out that this may be a Ukrainian counter-attack to retake territory captured by Russian forces in recent days. He notes that there has been a lot of activity in this area recently, but there are no changes to report for Robotyne.

Kherson Frontline Update

Jonathan reports that the situation around Kherson is challenging, with the Ukrainians maintaining positions on the East bank of the Dnipro River. He states that there have been no changes to the front line, with the Ukrainians repelling Russian attacks. Ukrainian attempts to cross the river have been hampered by icy conditions, although the recent thaw may help logistical challenges in this sector. However, there is a risk posed by Russian drones to any river crossing attempts.
