"Nothing is impregnable and so actually you know there's there's almost more rationale for sending this kind of tank rather than your really expensive really decent tanks that are still going to get knackered in those kind of assaults"
Hello Team!
Jonathan introduces part 2 of the Ukraine War News Update for July 31, 2023. Part 1 was restricted by YouTube.

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Frontline Update: Cluster Munitions
Video evidence shows Ukrainian forces using cluster munitions effectively to clear out Russian trench systems over a wide area. Previously only single cluster rounds had been seen. Jonathan thinks this is how they should be used rather than against single targets.

Crimean Bridges Update
Ukraine's Southern Command reports that Russian logistics have been severely impacted by attacks on the Kerch Bridge and Chonhar Bridge. Russia is now using amphibious assault ships to ferry equipment across the Kerch Strait, indicating the bridges are damaged.

Weekly Frontline Overview
In the past week, Ukrainian forces advanced 12.6 sq km in the south and 2 sq km around Bakhmut. Progress has slowed near Bakhmut due to stiff Russian resistance. In the Luhansk/Kharkiv region, Ukraine halted the Russian advance west of the Zherebets River, liberating Nadiya and forcing a Russian withdrawal from Novoheirivka.

Bakhmut Direction Update
Ukraine has captured more of southern Klishchiivka in the Bakhmut region. Fighting continues in Klishchiivka itself. North of Kurdiumivka, Ukrainian control has increased based on Russian forces no longer being present west of the railway tracks. The main focus is now on taking out Russian artillery and dugouts.

Southern Donetsk/Zaporizhzhia Update
- Ukraine has improved the tactical situation around Staromaiorske. Fighting continues towards Hrushevyi Yar and Priyutne.
- Russian claims of a counterattack in Staromaiorske were fake according to a Russian source "Romanov".
- Ukraine is pushing south of Staromaiorske and has reached the road between Novodonetske and Kamyanka.
- Unconfirmed Russian source claims Novodonetske and Novomaiorske are under Ukrainian control. Reasons cited are lack of supplies and low morale among Russian mobilized troops.
Military Aid Update
- Slovakia will hand over 2 more Zuzana 2 155mm self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine on Aug 1st. These are the first of 16 purchased by Germany, Denmark and Norway.
- Bulgaria's weapons exports doubled to €1.7B last year, likely going to Ukraine.
- Dozens of UK Challenger 2 tanks were reportedly destroyed that could have gone to Ukraine. 43 were disposed of as "beyond repair" at a cost of £4M.
- 135 Leopard 1A5 tanks are being delivered and refurbished by Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands for Ukraine. Jonathan argues there is rationale for sending older tanks that are still effective but more expendable than top-end modern tanks.
Geopolitics Update
- Czechia has frozen assets of sanctioned Russian oligarch Vladimir Yevtushenkov who has ties to Putin.
- In Georgia, activists again protested against Russian tourists, blocking access to coaches. Police intervened to let the Russians through. The protest seemed peaceful with music and positive messaging for Ukraine.
