Hello Team!
Jonathan provides his daily update on the situation in Ukraine, covering the key developments across the frontlines over the last 24 hours. Not a huge amount of overnight news but still plenty to discuss.

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND
Russian Losses
The official Ukrainian figures for Russian losses show an uptick in personnel losses, with a couple hundred more than the previous day. Also lost were:
- 1 tank
- 2 APCs
- 6 artillery pieces
- 1 MLRS
- 1 aircraft
- 5 drones
- 7 vehicles/fuel tanks
While not the worst day for Russia, the losses are still significant and impactful over time.

Military Equipment to Belarus
Several train echelons of Russian tanks and infantry fighting vehicles have arrived in Belarus recently, heading towards regions bordering Ukraine and Poland. Over the past two days, around 55 main battle tanks (T-80s and T-72s) have been transported. The reason is unclear - it could be a deception effort to make Ukraine think an attack from the north is possible, for training purposes, or to bolster genuine defences on the Polish border.

Friendly Fire and Aircraft Losses
Intercepted calls reveal increased instances of friendly fire among Russian soldiers, with lack of communication leading to deadly exchanges between their own side. There are also unconfirmed reports that the Russians shot down one of their own Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters. Additionally, the Ukrainian Airborne Assault Troops claim to have downed a Russian Su-24 attack aircraft.

French Artillery for Ukraine
Ukraine has received 6 more French TRF1 155mm howitzers. While the French are known for providing equipment like CAESAR and Crotale, they are also supplying howitzers. France tends to be quite secretive about their military assistance.

Zelensky's US Visit
President Zelensky's visit to the US appears to have gone very well. Before he arrived, the US announced a $1.85 billion aid package including a Patriot air defence battery, ammunition, HIMARs rockets, mortar systems, MRAPs, Humvees, anti-radiation missiles, and much more. There are even suggestions the aid could reach $45 billion as a result of Zelensky's visit. Jonathan will discuss this more in his extra video later.

Strike on Russian-held Donetsk
A restaurant in Russian-occupied Donetsk where Dmitry Rogozin, former Russian Deputy PM, was celebrating his birthday was struck. Rogozin was hospitalised, the DPR government chairman Vitaly Khotsenko was injured, and Khotsenko's bodyguard died. It's unclear if this was due to partisan activity or a Ukrainian strike.

Frontline Update: Kupyansk to Kreminna
- Some territory north of Kupyansk has been regained by Ukraine.
- Russians attacked towards Masiutivka near Kupyansk but were repelled. Capturing this settlement is seen as a prerequisite for advancing on Kupyansk from the northeast.
- Fighting continues around Svatove, with the settlement of Stelmakhivka frequently mentioned.
- Ukrainians seem to have advanced towards Pidkuichansk, an important area close to Svatove.
- Around Kreminna, not much new information other than repelled attacks near Chervonopopivka and Ploshchanka.
Frontline Update: Bakhmut
There are significant developments around Bakhmut:
- Ukrainians seem to have pushed Russians back in the eastern industrial area, possibly all the way to the M-03 highway. If confirmed, this would be a huge loss for Russia after their earlier advances into Bakhmut's eastern outskirts.
- Fighters in Bakhmut report the Russians are using "human wave" tactics with groups of 30-40 attacking, but Ukrainian defences are holding.
- The 46th Brigade claims to have kicked Wagner forces out of Bakhmut, but this is not officially confirmed.
- Fighting continues in Opytne to the south, but Russians may have been pushed back around 500m.
Frontline Update: Avdiivka to Vuhledar
- Not much news from Avdiivka this week, just the usual repelled attacks around Vodiane, Pervomaiske, etc.
- A Russian military blogger claims Russia is unable to assault Avdiivka head-on due to lack of personnel and heavy Ukrainian fortifications. Troops may have been moved to Bakhmut instead.
- Around Marinka, Russian claims of controlling the town vary wildly and contradict each other. Ukrainian sources say the defence of Marinka continues with massive Russian losses.
- South of Marinka, some minor adjustments to the frontline, but no major changes.
- Repelled Russian attacks reported around Novomykhailivka and Vuhledar, but no significant developments.
Kherson and Zaporizhzhia Fronts
- No major changes on the Zaporizhzhia or Kherson fronts.
- Ukrainians continue to target Russian rear areas in Kherson oblast:
- Struck a concentration of 30 Russian artillery pieces at an airfield near Kakhovka
- Reports of explosions near Velyka Lepetykha in Russian-occupied eastern Kherson
- Satellite imagery shows Russians trying to obscure their positions at Chaplynka airbase, which looked abandoned on Dec 14th imagery
- Ukrainians destroyed 8 pieces of heavy equipment near Vasylivka on the Dnipro River
- Russians are likely trying to conceal their positions in eastern Kherson and pulling back from the frontline, using the river as a natural barrier while strengthening defences to the rear and in Crimea.
Wrap Up
In summary, the key points are:
- Positive news for Ukraine in Bakhmut, having seemingly pushed back Russian advances
- A Ukrainian push underway in the north, around Dvorichna and Tavolzhanka, so more news may emerge from this area in the coming days
