Russian losses and Ukrainian attrition
The high Russian losses are a result of their aggressive counter-attacks whenever they lose ground. While this stops Ukrainian advances, it is seriously attriting Russian forces which is a metric of success for Ukraine. Footage supports the high equipment losses reported. Jonathan argues territorial gain is not as important right now as attriting Russian forces.

Horrific Russian attacks on civilians
Jonathan is extremely angry about a series of Russian attacks on civilians. In Groza, Kharkiv, 52 people including a child were killed in a deliberate Russian missile strike on a cafe and grocery store where a wake was taking place. Many bodies were unrecognisable. In central Kharkiv, apartment buildings were hit by Iskander missiles, killing a 10-year-old boy and injuring 16 others including an 11-month-old baby. A hospital in Bereslav was also destroyed by Russian bombs, with dozens of casualties. Jonathan condemns anyone attempting to justify these war crimes and atrocities. He argues the Russians cannot be allowed to win and must be stopped from committing such evil acts.

Overnight news and strikes
Overnight, the Russians launched 33 Shahed drones at Ukraine, with 25 shot down (a 75% interception rate). However, some got through and damaged port infrastructure and granaries on the Danube, impacting Ukraine's ability to export food to the world. The Ukrainians conducted their own drone attacks on military targets in Russia's Kursk region. Jonathan contrasts this with Russia's attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Russian artillery shell analysis
An analysis of artillery shell usage shows the Russians are now firing around 16,000 shells per day in 2023, down from 30,000 per day in 2022. Their production of 1.5 million shells in 2023 is not enough to sustain this rate of fire. Estimates suggest Russian fire will drop to just 7,000 shells per day in Q4 2023. Meanwhile, Ukraine's shell usage has increased to 8-9,000 per day. With Western production ramping up, Ukraine may soon have a significant artillery advantage, especially given the higher accuracy and quality of their shells and guns compared to Russia's.
