No ATACMS for Ukraine
Despite rumours that all US agencies had approved sending ATACMS long-range missiles to Ukraine, it appears they are not included in the latest $325 million aid package. The package will include cluster munitions, Avenger air defence systems, TOW anti-tank weapons, HIMARS ammo and Javelins, but no ATACMS. Jonathan is disappointed by this, as he believes ATACMS would be a significant addition to the long-range capabilities provided by Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles from the UK and France. He hopes the US will pledge ATACMS to Ukraine soon.

Brazil's Lula Criticises Russia and Calls for UN Reform
Brazil's President Lula made waves at the UN by criticising Russia's invasion of Ukraine and calling for reform of the UN Security Council. Lula said the Security Council is losing credibility due to the actions of permanent members who wage unauthorised wars in pursuit of territorial expansion, a clear reference to Russia. He said this paralysis proves the urgent need to make the Security Council more representative and effective. While Lula sees BRICS as a counterweight to US/Western hegemony in global trade, Jonathan points out some hypocrisy and issues with this stance, as BRICS' recent expansion includes countries with poor human rights records and reliance on fossil fuels. Nonetheless, Lula's strong condemnation of Russia's war and call for UN reform is significant coming from a BRICS leader and was met with applause. Jonathan is interested to see where this leads.

Clarifying the UK's Support for Ukraine
Jonathan clarifies that while he believes the UK has taken its "foot off the gas" in supporting Ukraine compared to earlier in the war, this is not to minimise the UK's important contributions. The change occurred around the resignation of Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, who was a prominent figure in assisting Ukraine. His replacement, Grant Shapps, is not as well-regarded. However, the UK has provided a lot of equipment and training to Ukraine, even if other countries like Germany are now taking the lead with large aid packages. The UK gave much of what it could early on and now has less in reserve. Not all aid is announced publicly. Jonathan believes the UK's support could use some revitalisation but acknowledges the good it has done and is still doing, such as training Ukrainian marines.

Other Updates
- Ukraine now has a triple Maxim machine gun which looks impressive
- Mobilised Russians report being sent to the front with injuries, abandoned by commanders, and imprisoned/tortured by their own side for refusing to fight in those conditions
- A Russian diplomat at the UN tried to object to Zelensky speaking first, but the Albanian president had a brilliant retort: "There is a solution for this if you agree. You stop the war and President Zelensky will not take the floor."
