- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Ukrainian General Staff figures for Russian losses on 25/02/2024

Oryx figures for Ukrainian and Russian losses on 25/02/2024

Jonathan reviews and compares the losses reported by Oryx (an open source intelligence website) for both sides, noting that the ratios are not quite where the Ukrainians would want them to be at closer to parity than the preferred 3:1 ratio. He lists the equipment visually confirmed as destroyed by Oryx for each side. He notes the Czech provided RM70 Vampire multiple launch rocket system and French provided CAESAR self-propelled gun lost by the Ukrainians that day will be of concern.

Zelensky's comments on Ukrainian losses

Jonathan discusses Zelensky's comments from the previous day (25th February 2024) in which he stated that 31,000 Ukrainian service personnel had been killed since the start of the full-scale invasion. Jonathan expresses his view that this is a significant loss for Ukraine and questions the accuracy of this figure as the last time a figure for Ukrainian losses was released it was significantly lower at 13,000 from Mykhailo Podolyak in August 2022. He speculates on the potential Ukrainian losses based on reported mobilisation figures, making comparisons with estimated Russian losses. He notes how difficult it is to estimate.

Losses of Nepalese mercenaries fighting for Russia

Jonathan reports on open source data revealing details of the losses suffered by Nepalese mercenaries fighting for Russia in Ukraine. The figures suggest that at least 16 Nepalese fighters have been killed, 116 wounded, 272 are missing and 4 are in captivity. Jonathan notes that the estimates that 14,000-15,000 Nepalese fighters are fighting for Russia, highlighting that Russia is recruiting globally and that this gives them a "competitive advantage" as Ukraine has fewer opportunities to recruit from abroad. He notes that the Ukrainians have relaxed mobilisation rules to allow greater numbers of foreigners to serve.

Ukrainian National Guard repels Russian assault near Robotyne

Jonathan reports on an incident near Robotyne in which four members of the Ukrainian National Guard repulsed a Russian assault column consisting of three BTR-82s. He describes how the Ukrainians destroyed the first vehicle with a TM-62 mine, the second with an RPG and the engaged the infantry from the third, successfully repelling the attack. He credits Ukrainian artillery and mortars with supporting the successful defence. Jonathan reads several comments left by viewers and a quote from a Russian source which confirms that the Russians are having a "hard time" of it near Robotyne with Ukrainian forces inflicting significant casualties and successfully using drones against the Russians. Jonathan notes that this is "good news" but warns that the Russians have often overcome setbacks in the past with "sheer mass".

Overnight distance strikes 25/02 - 26/02/2024

Jonathan reports on overnight distance strikes on Dnipro, Nikopol and the Sumy region. He describes how the Russians used a range of missiles and drones, highlighting that air defences were kept busy and that the Ukrainians struggle to intercept S-300s and Iskander missiles. He details the damage inflicted in each location. Jonathan explains that civilians will have abandoned their homes in frontline towns and villages and that the Ukrainian military utilise these to house troops, renting the properties from the owners. He notes that he has seen this himself on his trips to Ukraine.

SBU detain group planning drone attack on Patriot system

Jonathan reports that the SBU (Security Service of Ukraine) have detained a group of residents in the Chernihiv and Kyiv regions who had been trained by the FSB (Russian Federal Security Service) to carry out a drone strike on a Patriot air defence system. The group were detained before they could launch their attack.

Red Cross fails to reach Ukrainian POWs or abducted children

Jonathan reports that Andriy Yermak (Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine) has said that no Red Cross representatives have been able to reach Ukrainian prisoners of war or abducted Ukrainian children. Jonathan expresses his view that the Red Cross is "not coming out of this conflict looking good" noting the criticism it has received during the conflict for not doing enough to help. He highlights that he has spoken to aid workers who have been critical of the Red Cross' lack of action and referred to the controversy surrounding the head of the Belarussian Red Cross who was removed for complicity in the forced deportation of Ukrainian children to Belarus, describing this as a "war crime".

Zelensky - Russia preparing for new offensive in Spring/Summer 2024

Jonathan reports on Zelensky's comments in which he says that Russia is preparing for an offensive for early summer. Jonathan is sceptical of these comments, questioning whether this will constitute a new offensive or whether it will be a continuation of the offensive operations already underway.

Russian war crimes near Bakhmut

Russian state continues to fund Propagandist Solovyov

Jonathan reports that Russian state propagandist Vladimir Solovyov receives over 16 million dollars annually from the Russian state for “information and ideological warfare”. This information comes from the exiled independent Russian media outlet Meduza.
