Victoria Derbyshire interviews Carla Sands

Victoria Derbyshire begins by asking Carla Sands whether Ukrainian's are right to be concerned that they are being cut out of the peace process. Sands responds by saying that the "killing will stop" and that "the US and Russia, our leadership hadn't been talking for three and a half years. And this war never would have started without weak leadership in the White House, without Joe Biden and Kamala Harris being in the White House". Victoria responds by pointing out that "this war wouldn't have started if Russia hadn't invaded its independent sovereign neighbour". Sands then appears to suggest that the US wouldn't tolerate troops on its border and that the killing has to stop on both sides. She then appears to blame the EU and UK for not working with Trump. Victoria then raises comments made by former UK Prime Minister John Major (who served alongside US President George H Bush) who has criticised US Vice President J.D Vance for suggesting a retreat of free speech in Europe and the UK whilst "cuddling up to President Putin where if you speak against him you get put in jail". Victoria points out that this was a ridiculous thing for J.D Vance to say given the lack of free speech in Russia and that all European countries (apart from Hungary) are ranked above the US in the freedom of press index (Reporters Without Borders). Sands then says that she doesn't "know where you got that from". Jonathan interjects that he would have challenged Sands on this point and asked her to justify her claims. Victoria then goes on to question why more pressure is not being put on Russia to which Sands responds that the "war is on the way to ending because of President Trump's common action with his great team that he has right now negotiating a peace deal". Victoria then asks why Trump doesn't just tell Putin to remove his troops from Ukraine. In response, Sands suggests that Victoria tells him on the BBC. Victoria then asks whether that would be a good idea to which Sands says she believes Trump is "looking at the situation with realistic eyes. I wish the rest of Europe had been looking at it with realistic eyes and making positive moves to end the war quickly. He's only been in office for three weeks. They're at the table negotiating a peace deal." Sands appears to be referring to Trump here rather than Biden which is incorrect. Sands then appears to suggest that the EU/UK should "work with President Trump" and that he is "the greatest president in the modern age" and that "he's going to go down in history as one of the greatest political figures in world history".

Jonathan says that he "would have just gone to town on Carla Sands" and called out her hypocrisy. He points out that Europe is not being "petty" as Sands suggested but that this is "sheer projection" and that the "pettiness" is coming from Trump and his supporters. He praises Victoria Derbyshire's interviewing skills, describing her as a "seasoned interviewer". Jonathan then criticises mainstream media interviewers for sticking to a set list of questions and moving to the next question when they should spend longer on certain points to get to the truth.
