Germany Announces Further Support For Ukraine Air Defence

Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has said that countries have pledged €1 billion in funding for the German Air Defence initiative. Lithuania has pledged six Amber 1800 ED surveillance radars and Germany will provide a further Patriot battery to Ukraine. So far, Belgium has pledged €200m, Netherlands €150m, Denmark €134m and Canada $52m (already earmarked for Iris-T missiles). Jonathan speculates that perhaps 1 or 2 Patriot Batteries may be purchased and delivered to Ukraine. The German IAAD (Immediate Action on Air Defence) initiative was launched 5 weeks ago to bolster Ukrainian air defence.

Groundbreaking Electronic Warfare Backpack Developed in Ukraine

Jonathan highlights an innovative new electronic warfare backpack developed by a Ukrainian company called "Vertus" to protect troops from Russian drones. The backpack costs $7,000, is portable and can protect a unit of 8-10 soldiers operating in the 720-1050 MHz range by jamming and disabling drones in a protective dome that spans several hundred metres and can operate continuously for 2 hours. Jonathan highlights how 90% of Ukrainian casualties that had arrived at a medical staging point were injured by drones so this new backpack would be a welcome development.

Zelensky Signs Law Allowing Prisoners to Fight for Ukraine

Zelensky has signed a law allowing prisoners to be released from prison if they volunteer to fight for Ukraine. The Ukrainian MoD hope that this will bolster troop numbers by 15-20,000.

German SPD Politicians Call For Western Troops to Defend Against Russian Airstrikes

Members of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's SPD party have called for Western troops to be deployed on Ukrainian territory to defend against Russian airstrikes. Joe Weingarten, an SPD Defence expert has suggested that German troops equipped with Patriot systems could be based on NATO territory to protect Western Ukraine. Jonathan explains that there is debate about whether German troops have to be based in Ukraine in order for Taurus missiles to be sent to Ukraine, as the German Ambassador to the UK has previously said.

Austria Continues to Supply Weapons to Russia Despite EU Sanctions

Despite EU sanctions, Austrian companies continue to supply weapons to Russia. 11 Steyr Mannlicher sniper rifles were sent to Russia in February 2024 alone. Jonathan jokes about the name of the company.
