"Ukraine needs to keep striving towards greater transparency, less corruption. They've moved somewhat on the Corruption Perception Index but that's a continued project, isn't it? And they have an awful lot of work to do to eradicate corruption and make Ukraine as transparent as possible. And that will then help them to get into the EU, as we know they want to."

Hello Team!

Jonathan provides an update on the Russia-Ukraine war for February 1st, 2023. He will also be posting a frontline update shortly after this video.

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA

  1. These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
  2. These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
  3. All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
  4. Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
  5. Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
  6. Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
  7. Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
  8. All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
  9. Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.

Russian Losses

  • 920 liquidated Russian personnel, which is a very bad day for Russian troops and one of the highest figures recorded
  • 8 tanks, 4 APCs, 10 artillery pieces, and 4 MLRS lost, which is fairly high
  • A Ukrainian artillery battery commanded by a friend of a source destroyed 3 Russian SPGs with only 4 rounds, an incredible 75% success rate
  • 13 vehicles and fuel tanks also lost

NATO Countries and Weapons Supplies

  • The Lithuanian president says NATO countries should stop drawing lines and supply Ukraine with any weapons it needs
  • However, Hungary and Austria will not send weapons to prevent further escalation. Hungary under Orban has become perceived as the most corrupt country in Europe.
  • The new Czech president, a former NATO general, says Ukraine should be let into NATO as soon as the war is over and that Western nations should have almost no limits on what they send to equip Ukraine's military
  • Ukraine's defence minister Reznikov went to France to discuss fighter jets. While the US is not ready, other allies appear more willing. There is some frustration and disagreement within the Pentagon on this issue.

Weapons and Aid

  • Germany will deliver 105 Vector drones from Quantum Systems to Ukraine, although it's unclear if these are being donated or purchased
  • The US is readying a $2.2 billion weapons package for Ukraine that includes longer-range GLSDB rockets for the first time. These have a range of 150km and could allow Ukraine to hit valuable Russian military targets further behind the lines. However, it may take until 2024 to see these munitions in Ukrainian hands.
  • Poland wants to train Ukrainian Leopard 2 tank crews in just 5 weeks by intensifying the training

Partisan Activity and Anti-Corruption

  • Ukrainian partisans claim to have eliminated two high-ranking FSB officers in Crimea, showing nowhere is safe for the Russians
  • Ukrainian law enforcement raided the house of powerful oligarch Kolomoisky, who is accused of evading customs payments and embezzling oil products. This shows Ukraine is making some progress on anti-corruption efforts, although much more work is still needed.
