Romania: Background on Pro-Russian Candidate Georgescu
🎦 00:27-01:30⏩
Jonathan provides background on Kalin Georgescu, the pro-Russian candidate who came first in the annulled first round of the Romanian presidential election:
- He is an eco-fascist nationalist with strong pro-Russian views.
- He is extremely anti-Ukraine.
- He declared that he would stop aid to Ukraine, pull Romania out of NATO, and stop the transit of Ukrainian grain through Romania.
- He was a political unknown before registering for the election on 1st October 2024.
- He gained around 20% of the vote, enough to put him through to the second round with the other candidate, Lascone.
- His campaign was heavily promoted on TikTok.

The Paradox of Tolerance
🎦 02:29-05:32⏩
Jonathan digresses, explaining the Paradox of Tolerance.
- Jonathan explains that it’s one thing to defend freedom of speech, but that this can be a weakness because illiberal regimes can use this freedom to their advantage.
- Russia and China (and by extension, North Korea and Iran) don't have platforms where people can speak freely. They use Western platforms to manipulate people.
- There is an asymmetry here as these countries have closed systems - western nations provide them with the technology they need to control their own populations.
- Autocratic regimes monitor their populations and other autocracies do the same.
- Jonathan recommends Autocracy Inc. by Anne Applebaum which explores how autocracies thrive on information.
- There is a paradox here because the more tolerant you are, the more you are taken advantage of.
- This can be applied to wider society - liberal democracies tolerate the intolerant, creating a breeding ground for intolerance. Eventually, this intolerance will take over.
Romania: Should Free Speech be Limited?
🎦 05:32-06:02⏩
Jonathan gets back on topic:
- Jonathan argues that the issue is not about shutting down free speech or good-faith discussions.
- It is about preventing bad-faith state actors from interfering in free and fair elections by manipulating people.
- This is what happened in Romania.
- Jonathan believes that the Romanian Constitutional Court was right to annul the election.
Romania: Election Results Annulled
🎦 06:02-06:44⏩
- Elections will be repeated from round one and it is highly likely that Georgescu will be arrested for treason.
- This could be politically motivated as the current Romanian Prime Minister, Marcel Cealacu, may benefit - he came a close third.
- George Simeon, leader of the ultra-nationalist party, who supported Georgescu, is asking their supporters to stay at home and calling the annulment a coup d’etat.
Romania: Prime Minister Cealacu Statement
🎦 06:44-08:11⏩
- Romanian Prime Minister, Marcel Cealacu stated that the court’s decision was the correct one after declassified documents showed blatant distortion of the results after Russian interference.
- Although Cealacu could benefit, Jonathan believes that it was still the right thing to do.
- The people of Romania have the right to vote again (possibly for the same candidate and the same party), but the interference needs to be addressed.
Romania: "Cleanest Elections Since the Fall of Communism"
🎦 08:11-08:52⏩
- Sebastian Slavitescu (unknown): believes that this will be the cleanest election since the fall of communism and scrutiny will be high. Jonathan agrees.
- There will be massive resources dedicated to combating Russian hybrid warfare, with full transparency.
- Romania needs the support of its allies, partners and friends.
Romania: Pro-Russian Politicians Flee, President to Address Nation
🎦 08:52-09:28⏩
- Diana Sosovaka and Viktor Ponta, who backed Georgescu, have fled Romania for Doha.
- The Romanian president, Klaus Iohannis will address the nation (7pm local time)
Romania: The Rise of Extremism and Foreign Interference
🎦 09:28-10:37⏩
- Jonathan is concerned by the 30-35% of the vote that went to extremist parties.
- He acknowledges that people have a right to vote for these parties, but that the dodgy aspects of the election need to be investigated.
- It is reassuring that Romania is tackling the issue of Russian interference.
Romania: Pro-Russian Candidate to Speak, Possible Arrest
🎦 10:37-11:22⏩
- Kalin Georgescu will address the nation at 9pm, local time and is asking his supporters to stay at home.
- Jonathan believes that Georgescu will be arrested.
- Jonathan refers to Aleksandr Dugin, the Russian philosopher whose ultra-nationalist ideas are believed to have influenced Putin.
- In a tweet, Dugin listed places where wokists and Democrat elites could flee to (e.g. Israel, Dubai, Moldova) - the same places that Russian liberals have fled to. He also said that Moldova would be part of Romania soon, but that Romania would be part of Russia.
Romania: Could this be a Turning Point?
🎦 11:22-12:25⏩
- Jonathan shares a tweet from Romanian source, Derek Tanis. Tanis pointed out the irony of Dugin’s tweet given the recent events in Romania which suggest the country is moving away from Russian influence.
- Jonathan refers to a Twitter thread from Derek Tanis which he will update.
- The Romanian president will address the nation shortly.
- One of the problems for Georgescu was that he declared zero campaign funds, yet ran a very expensive TikTok campaign. The source of these funds needs to be investigated.
Romania: President Iohannis Addresses the Nation
🎦 12:25-12:55⏩
Jonathan summarises Romanian President Iohannis' address to the nation:
- A new government will be formed, and new presidential elections will be organised.
- In line with the Romanian constitution, he will remain president until a new president has been inaugurated following the elections.
- Romania will remain a solid and reliable partner to the EU and NATO.
Romania: Euromaidan Press Article
🎦 12:55-14:44⏩
- Jonathan shares an article from the Euromaidan Press.
- Romania has supported Kyiv since the start of the war, providing military aid and facilitating grain exports through the Black Sea port of Constanta.
- However, the influence of the pro-Russian far-right is causing concern.
- The annulment of the election is good news for Ukraine.
- Intelligence data, declassified by Romanian President Iohannis on the 4th, was given to the Constitutional Court. It revealed that Russia carried out a large-scale campaign on TikTok and Telegram to support Georgescu.
- Georgescu, a political outsider who declared no campaign spending, won the election on November 24th.
- He was due to face Elena Lascone, of the SAVE Romania Union party, in a run-off on December 8th.
- Intelligence was provided by Romania’s intelligence service, foreign intelligence service, special telecommunications service and the Ministry of Foreign and Internal Affairs, highlighting Russia’s alleged influence operations.
- Numerous complaints, calling for the first-round results to be annulled, were made to the Constitutional Court.
- It is unclear on what grounds the court made its ruling.
- Georgescu secured 23% of the vote.
Romania: Further evidence of Election Interference
🎦 14:44-15:27⏩
- Jonathan highlights additional information about the Romanian election:
- A tweet a couple of hours ago from Tim White about the annulment of the election result, following evidence of foreign interference via TikTok, and in favour of a pro-Russian, right-wing candidate.
- A Google translation of the Romanian Constitutional Court’s press release.
Wrap up
🎦 15:27-15:59⏩
- Jonathan summarises that the Romanian election result is an interesting and important outcome. He views it as good news for democracy.
- Jonathan is pleased that Russia is being challenged and held accountable for its interference.
