Front line update
- The front line situation is difficult to get consistent information on due to fog of war and each side trying to control the narrative
- Russia claims heavy fighting in 5 directions with a difficult but controlled situation in Kupyansk and Bakhmut. Ukraine continues offensives towards Melitopol and Berdyansk
- A powerful Russian group of over 100,000 personnel, 900 tanks, 370 self-propelled guns is concentrated in the Liman-Kupyansk direction which could force Ukraine to adapt their plans
- Battles ongoing around Staromiyorsk, Urozhaine, Robotyne with conflicting reports on who controls what
- Andrew Perpetua is confused by open source intel showing Russians north of areas Ukraine was thought to control around Robotyne
Military Aid
- F-16 training for Ukrainian pilots hasn't begun yet but first groups expected to depart soon, enabled by US giving permission to facilitate this
- An online Ramstein format meeting is being held today which could lead to announcements of more equipment for Ukraine
Russian troops
Another account has emerged of Russian convicts becoming "ghost soldiers" - serving in secret without documentation and forcibly sent to Ukraine, highlighting how desperate Russia is for front line troops to use in high risk assaults. The "Storm Z" unit they serve in is compared to a WW2 era penal battalion.

Geopolitics
- A French TV report claims Poland and Baltic states are preparing to potentially send troops into Ukraine if Russia looks set to win the war, but this is unconfirmed
- To allow foreign military bases in Ukraine after the war, changes to the constitution would be needed
- The EU has appealed to Russia to resume the grain deal. China has offered to join negotiations on continuing the deal
- Under the Montreux Convention, Turkey has closed the Bosphorus to warships of all nations except Black Sea countries Romania and Bulgaria whose frigates could escort grain ships
- The US says exporting Ukrainian grain by land is less effective than by sea but they won't provide military escorts for cargo ships
- Ukraine's finance minister says frozen Russian assets must be confiscated and used for aid and reconstruction as soon as possible. Different approaches are being considered by Western nations
