"Russia's port of Vladivostok, which is right on the eastern shores of Russia right down by China, will be added to the list of transit ports for the domestic transportation of goods after 163 years. - Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Drone Attacks
Russia launched another drone attack with 18 Shahed drones overnight, plus 2 more shot down earlier near Dnipro, as well as a Merlin drone. Ukraine claims 100% of the drones were shot down, especially around Kyiv which has strong air defenses. Jonathan suggests these attacks may be sacrificial to probe and locate Ukrainian air defense systems.

Ukrainian Strikes
Ukrainian long-range artillery destroyed overnight:

Russian Tank Losses in Mariinka
A large number of Russian T-90 tanks, possibly a full company of up to 10, were spotted near Mariinka by a Ukrainian Poseidon drone. Reports indicate they were subsequently destroyed overnight by a HIMARS strike before they could take part in an assault on the town. If confirmed, this would represent a significant loss of Russia's most modern operational tanks.

Equipment Attrition
Beyond combat losses, Jonathan notes there will be substantial natural attrition and wear and tear on equipment like artillery that requires maintenance and barrel replacements. A photo shows a Russian self-propelled howitzer with its barrel blown apart from overuse. He questions if Russia has the same repair and maintenance capabilities as Ukraine.

Russian Losses in Bakhmut
According to Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, Russia is losing a battalion per day, up to 800 men, in the Bakhmut area. He claims total Russian losses in the Bakhmut direction are up to 70,000 killed and wounded over the course of the war. While the figures may be inflated, they indicate very substantial Russian casualties as they try to capture the town.

Attacks on Mariupol
There were significant Ukrainian attacks on Russian-occupied Mariupol, with large explosions reported overnight, especially around the airport area. Prior to the attack, Russia had moved helicopters to Mariupol airport, which may have been targeted. The exiled mayor claims 150 Russian personnel were killed. Storm Shadow cruise missiles supplied by the UK may have been used. Air raid alerts and power outages were reported in Mariupol the following morning.

Military Aid
- The US has given the green light for F-16 fighter jets to be provided to Ukraine by a coalition of European countries. Training of Ukrainian pilots and ground crew will begin in the coming weeks and take several months. The jets will require weapons, spare parts and maintenance support. Denmark and Portugal have joined the Netherlands and UK in the training coalition.
- President Biden will announce a new $375 million military aid package for Ukraine at the G7 summit.
- A large number of Italian B1 Centauro tank destroyers and Iveco armored vehicles were spotted on the move, possibly heading for Ukraine, though this is unconfirmed.
Sanctions
- The US has banned the import to Russia of telephone equipment, appliances, microchips, as well as carpets, cosmetics, alcohol, watches and antiques.
- Japan has prohibited providing architectural and engineering services to Russian customers and frozen assets of 100 individuals.
- The US added 71 companies supporting Russia's economy to the trade blacklist.
- Canada imposed sanctions on 70 individuals and entities linked to Russia's military industry and elites.
- Australia sanctioned 21 Russian entities ahead of the G7 summit, including those involved in taking over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Geopolitics
- President Zelenskyy continues intense international diplomacy, meeting with Arab League leaders and calling for support for the Ukrainian peace formula requiring full Russian withdrawal.
- Russia was absent from the G7 summit in Japan, Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia, and a Central Asian summit in China, showing its increasing isolation and waning influence, while Ukraine makes diplomatic inroads.
