🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Losses
- Ukrainian reports of Russian losses for the previous day (caveat: propaganda and inaccurate) include:
- 800 liquidated personnel
- 7 tanks, 4 APCs, 8 artillery systems, 1 MLRS, 1 aircraft, 1 helicopter
- At least one Russian aircraft or helicopter is taken out by Ukrainians daily, sometimes up to 5 in a week
- Jonathan would like to see evidence for these claims as they significantly impact Russia's ability to contest airspace
Airspace Situation
- Neither side has air supremacy or superiority; airspace is fully contested
- Neither side has been able to completely eradicate air defence systems
- Air forces on both sides are afraid to go close to the front line, often releasing missiles from safer distances
- Reports of Ukrainian Su-25 possibly downed by Russian R-37 missile near Kramatorsk
Ukrainian Artillery Hits
- Ukrainian long-range artillery hit and destroyed overnight:
- 2 command posts
- 2 positions and aircraft systems
- 5 concentrations of Russian troops
- Operational Room South spokeswoman Natalia Guminyuk stated Ukrainians are focused on maximum depletion of enemy troops and preparing ground for possible further offensive by AFU in the south
Russian Kinzhal Missile Hits Odessa
- Video appears genuine showing one of Russia's hypersonic Kinzhal missiles hitting Odessa, causing problems with energy supplies
- The missile hit its target and caused the intended interruption of energy infrastructure
Tank Promises to Ukraine
- Ukraine has been promised a total of 321 heavy tanks from Western countries according to Ukraine's ambassador to France
- This is at the lower end of the 300-500 tanks Ukraine requested
- Poland is leading an initiative to create a coalition of countries donating modern armoured weapons, including Leopard 2A4 tanks, to Ukraine
Military Training and Weapons
- First Ukrainian military personnel arrived in Cologne, Germany to train on Marder IFVs; Germany will supply Ukraine with 40 Marders
- Italy and France agreed on joint order of 700 Aster 30 missiles (worth €2 billion) for Franco-Italian SAMP/T air defence system they plan to provide to Ukraine
- Aster 30 missiles intercept various air threats; Block 1 and Block 1NT designed to counter ballistic missiles
- If Ukraine gets Aster 30 to take out ballistic missiles, it will significantly improve their air defence coverage
- US Senators call on Biden to send ATACMs and F-16s to Ukraine to erode Russia's capability to continue fighting
Diplomatic Tensions
- Hungarian ambassador summoned by Ukrainian authorities after Viktor Orbán reportedly called Ukraine a "wasteland" similar to Afghanistan
- Orbán said Hungary would veto any EU sanctions against Russia affecting nuclear energy as Hungary has a Russian-built nuclear plant it plans to expand
Czech Presidential Race
Jonathan mentions the Czech presidential race between a retired NATO-aligned general, Petr Pavel, and the tycoon ex-prime minister Andrej Babiš. He plans to discuss this in more depth in a separate video.
