"It's absolutely incredible that there are so many place names that are the same."
Hello Team!
Jonathan introduces this video as a "Ukraine War Corrections" video where he rants about the confusing place names in different areas of Ukraine. He mentions that this video serves no other purpose than him ranting and then giving a confession.

Confusing Place Names in Ukraine
Jonathan points out several examples of confusingly similar place names in Ukraine, especially in the Bakhmut area:
- Volodymyrivka: One near Bakhmut and another near Bukhradar
- Krasnohorivka: One just south of Avdiivka and another just north of Avdiivka
- Opytne: One south of Avdiivka and another south of Bakhmut
- Bakhmutivka and Novobakhmutivka: On opposite sides of a railway near Avdiivka, only 12 kilometers apart
- Vesele: One south of Avdiivka and another north of Bakhmut
- Brestova: One north of Bakhmut and another along an axis from Volodymyrivka
- Ivka: Two places with this name in close proximity
Jonathan expresses his disbelief at the fact that these similarly named places are located so close to each other, unlike in America or the UK where they might be separated by hundreds of miles.

The Topoli Confusion
Jonathan recounts a mistake he made in a previous video about the Ukrainians raising a flag in a village called Topoli. He had initially talked about a Topoli in the grey zone but got confused when re-recording the video and mistakenly referred to a different Topoli on the other side of the Oskil River. It turns out there are three places named Topoli in close proximity:
- The original Topoli in the grey zone that Jonathan meant to talk about
- A Topoli on the other side of the Oskil River, behind Russian defensive lines
- A third Topoli discovered while making this video, only 5.5 kilometers away from the other two
Jonathan expresses his astonishment at the ridiculousness of having three places with the same name so close together.

More Examples of Duplicate Place Names
As Jonathan continues to explore the map, he finds even more examples of duplicate place names:
- Brestova: A third instance near the Serebiansky Forest
- Ternove: One down by the Serebiansky Forest and another elsewhere
- Novohryhorivka: One instance and another called Novoharyivka nearby
- Mykolaivka: Another duplicate place name
- Yehidne: One near Bakhmut and another up in Kupyansk
Jonathan jokingly suggests that there are only about 40 place names in Ukraine that keep getting recycled.

A Genuine Problem
Despite the humorous tone, Jonathan mentions that he spoke with Anton, who runs a Ukrainian charity, and learned that the duplicate place names are a genuine problem. Anton said that coordinates are often given instead of place names to avoid confusion due to the numerous identical names throughout the country.

Wrap up
Jonathan apologizes for his mistake about Topoli but reiterates that the presence of three identically named places in the same general area illustrates the issue. He humorously points out that even a uniquely named place like New York, which is named after the city in America (which in turn is named after York in Yorkshire, UK), might not be safe from duplication in Ukraine. Jonathan concludes by saying he will continue to explore more duplicate place names and that this video will serve as a reference for the incredible issue of naming places in Ukraine.
