Jonathan provides the latest news on the Russia-Ukraine war, including Ukrainian released figures for Russian losses. He notes these figures are indicative even if not 100% accurate. 910 liquidated Russian personnel losses is another terribly bad day for Russia, with over 2,000 losses in the last two days.

- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Equipment Losses
- 8 tanks, 15 APCs, 4 artillery systems, 1 anti-aircraft system, 1 Su-25 aircraft, 1 helicopter, 3 UAVs, 5 vehicles, 3 pieces of special equipment lost
- Evidence is filtering through of these losses, including:
- Su-25 shot down near Bakhmut, pilot ejected and captured
- Su-35S fighter jet recently shot down (2nd known loss)
- Columns of vehicles lost around Vuhledar
Attacks and Counterattacks
- Fire at an oil refinery in Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia, likely from partisan activity or drone strikes. This hits Russian infrastructure.
- Large fire at factory in Latvia that produces drones for Ukraine. Suspected Russian sabotage.
- Kharkiv hit by at least 6 S-300 surface-to-air missiles used in secondary ground attack mode, causing civilian damage. Could constitute a war crime.
Aid and Assistance
- Poltava region in Ukraine received 45 Starlink satellite communication stations from Polish partners
- Current list of 430-450 Western tanks going to Ukraine in 2023 including Leopard 1s, T-72s, PT-91s, Leopard 2s, Abrams, Challengers. Approaching upper range requested by Ukraine.
- German Leopard 2A6 tanks to be available by end of March
- French Senate almost unanimously called for increase in military assistance to Ukraine. France is a significant military power.
Ukraine EU Accession
Ukraine is lagging behind Turkey, Serbia, Albania in readiness for EU accession. Desire to expedite Ukraine's membership as a reward for standing up to Russia. However, Ukraine still needs to jump through many hoops regarding corruption, freedom of press etc. Turkey has stalled its accession despite being relatively close before. Ukraine has a long way to go with a score of 69/132 points compared to 94+ for other candidate countries.

Zelensky UK Visit
President Zelensky is arriving in the UK on February 8th to meet PM Rishi Sunak and Ukrainian servicemen training in the country. The sudden unannounced appearance is due to tight security after his EU visit was leaked. He will be asking for more support and cementing the UK-Ukraine relationship with the new British PM.

Compensation for Soldier Deaths
In Russian-occupied regions like Donetsk and Luhansk, widows of dead soldiers from the "sham republics" are being compensated with fur coats, possibly stolen. In remote Russian districts, compensation has included frozen fish, sheep carcasses and wood. Propagandists are jumping on how ridiculous this seems. The difference in compensation between volunteer soldiers and mobilised soldiers is touched upon.
