Jonathan provides a frontline update for May 29, 2023, starting with the northeast sector from Kupyansk to Svatove to Kreminna.

Northeast Sector - Kupyansk to Svatove to Kreminna
- Russians have apparently gained control of land east of the Oskil River near Madjutivka hamlet, which is unsurprising and not a great loss for Ukraine
- According to Poulet-Velon's mapping, Ukrainians have gained some ground west of the Kerebets River between Oskil and Krasna rivers, taking 9 sq km while Russians lost 4 sq km
- Russians claim to have destroyed Ukrainian positions near Magi Tifka and expanded their control, but no visual confirmation
- Russian forces regularly conduct unsuccessful ground attacks and fire prohibited gas cylinders on Ukrainian positions near Kreminna
- Disagreement remains around Russian claims of gains southeast of Bilarivka
Bakhmut Area
- Relief-in-place operation replacing Wagner troops with regular Russian forces may be delayed past June 1st
- Tempo of Russian operations around Bakhmut remains low, with only one combat clash in the city in last 24 hours
- Geolocated footage indicates marginal Russian gains west of Klishchivka
- Ukrainian forces continue counterattacks near Orokovo-Vasilyivka in the north
- Ukrainians have made gains northwest of Bakhmut according to pro-Ukrainian mappers
- Geolocated footage shows Ukrainians taking a Russian position northwest of Klishchivka
- Reporter from Ukraine claims Ukrainians attacking Russians from the west along a canal as well as from the north, putting them under pressure
Other Frontline Areas
- Electronic warfare station hit in Soledar, as Russians join up air defenses and ISR capabilities
- Rebar pro-Russian source reports no ground fighting along entire frontline, only artillery, missiles and drone attacks
- Clarity that Russians control Mazhi Atifka, fighting now 500-1000m south at Liman Peshi
- Contested areas reported south of Bakhmut, north of Avdiivka and around Krasnohorivka
- Russians claim to have regained lost positions south of Povomysky but with losses
- Repelled attacks by both sides reported at Novo Konovo and Krasnohorivka
- No confirmed Russian ground attacks in western Donetsk Oblast
- Pule-Volon map shows 12.5 sq km of Ukrainian gains west of Vlaiko-Novosilka near Zelenopole and Novopil
- Russian source claimed failed Ukrainian raid across Dnipro River
Prigozhin's Criticism of Putin
Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin appears to have indirectly undermined Putin's authoritarian regime, saying "If you are starting a war please have the character will and steal balls and then you'll be able to achieve something", which is seen as a massive insult to Putin. This may be in response to Putin not rewarding Prigozhin for taking Bakhmut. There is a public tussle between not just the Russian military and Prigozhin, but also Putin and Prigozhin. However, Putin needs Prigozhin which is why he hasn't "fallen out of a window" yet for his utility to the Russian leader.
