"It's not justifying murder. It's like, oh, do you know what? Everyone, you know, there are murders in every society, so therefore murder's alright. Yeah, murder's alright. Yeah. Meh."

Hello Team

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA

  1. These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
  2. These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
  3. All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
  4. Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
  5. Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
  6. Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
  7. Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
  8. All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
  9. Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.

Ukrainian General Staff Report Daily Statistics - 16/02/2024

🎦 01:26-02:12

Jonathan reports that the Ukrainian General Staff figures show that Russian losses are substantial, exceeding typical averages. Jonathan highlights the large number of personnel (1210) and equipment (23 tanks, 39 APCs, 21 artillery systems) lost by Russia. He includes the caveat that these figures are "as always" up for debate/contested. He provides a link to the figures in the description.

Jonathan's Opinion: High Ukrainian Personnel Losses, Lower Equipment Losses

🎦 02:12-03:01

Jonathan acknowledges that the General Staff figures don't tell the whole story. He offers his perspective on likely Ukrainian losses, suggesting that while Ukrainian personnel losses are likely to be high, equipment losses will be significantly lower. He reasons that the Ukrainians have less equipment, and don't use it in the same way (offensively) as the Russians do, instead holding their equipment back.

Ukrainian Commanders in Avdiivka Report Record Russian Losses

🎦 03:01-03:43

Jonathan reports that Ukrainian commanders on the front line in Avdiivka report "record days of Russian losses". He questions the accuracy of the daily statistics from the General Staff but acknowledges that reports of heavy losses from multiple sources such as the General Staff and commanders suggest there is credibility to the reports.

Andrew Perpetua: Visually Confirmed Russian and Ukrainian Losses

🎦 03:43-07:14

Jonathan analyses Russian and Ukrainian losses compiled by military analyst and OSINT researcher Andrew Perpetua. Jonathan notes that the figures generally corroborate those reported by the Ukrainian General Staff. He analyses the types of equipment lost by each side, suggesting that the loss of a Russian Command and Control truck represents a significant loss for Russia, not just in terms of its monetary value, but also due to the loss of expertise and knowledge within. Turning his attention to Russian tank losses, Jonathan observes that the volume of T90Ms destroyed suggests that the percentage of this particular variant lost is likely to be very high.

US Estimates of Russian Casualties: 60,000 Killed 300,000 Wounded

🎦 07:14-08:21

Jonathan reports that the US estimates that Russia has suffered 60,000 killed and 300,000 wounded during the conflict. Jonathan notes that the figures have been questioned because they have remained the same for several months, but clarifies that they don't include Wagner, DPR, LPR or other foreign fighters. He shares a comment from a viewer which estimates that Wagner, DPR and LPR account for another 100,000 casualties.

CNN Journalist Reports on the Number of Russian Casualties

🎦 08:21-10:05

Jonathan shares a report from CNN journalist Frederick Plightken who describes seeing large numbers of Russian corpses on the front line during a recent visit. Plightken highlights the disparity between Russian and Ukrainian morale, claiming that Ukrainians understand they are inflicting significant casualties on the invading Russian forces. Jonathan agrees with Plightken's assessment, adding that Russian victories (if they can be considered as such) are likely to be pyrrhic victories.

The 3rd Specialised Brigade Report Record Enemy Casualties and Equipment Losses in Avdiivka

🎦 10:05-11:05

Jonathan reports that the 3rd Specialised Brigade in Avdiivka claim to have set a new record for enemy casualties and equipment destroyed. He goes on to describe how the Brigade used FPV drones in combination with artillery to destroy significant numbers of armoured vehicles, including 7 tanks and a TOS-1A thermobaric rocket launcher.

Ukrainian Soldier Describes Horrific Scenes From the Zenit Fortification

🎦 11:05-12:47

Jonathan shares the account of a Ukrainian soldier who describes horrific scenes after being ordered to abandon the Zenit Fortification. He shares a direct quote: " _"The evacuation did not arrive. The last group left the bunker and this dialogue on the radio wounded us to our very core... 'From the uh radio...' 'Wounded, there will be no evacuation.' The wounded person says, 'Commander, no, there won't be, leave the wounded men and burn everything.' He did not know he was talking to a wounded man. There were at least six people left. It was also difficult to read their message in the chat, their despair, their doom. It will always stay with us. Only the bravest die"._ "

🎦 12:47-14:27

Jonathan reports that Ukrainian FPV drone operators have destroyed a Russian Starlink terminal. He cites a report from Defense One which claims that Russia acquired the Starlink terminals from Arab countries. Jonathan goes on a rant about Elon Musk and his recent comments about the war in Ukraine, describing Musk's claim that calling him a Putin apologist is "absurd", as absurd. He criticises Musk for appearing on a livestream with "overt Russian propagandists" David Sacks and Vivek Ramaswamy and repeating Russian propaganda. He encourages any viewers who still support Musk to "get their head checked", arguing that whilst Musk may be good at other things, "in this context he sucks bad".

Ukraine Claims Russia Used 24 North Korean Ballistic Missiles Between 30/12/2023-07/02/2024

🎦 14:27-16:38

Jonathan reports that Russia has fired at least 24 North Korean ballistic missiles at Ukraine between 30th December 2023 and 7th February 2024. Citing Ukrainian prosecutor General Andriy Kostin, he says that the attacks killed 14 civilians and injured over 70. Jonathan questions why the international community is not doing more about North Korea's involvement in the conflict.

Russia Increases Use of Glide Bombs and White Phosphorus in Avdiivka

🎦 16:38-18:04

Alexei Navalny Dies in Prison: Putin Blames the West, Zelensky Blames Putin

🎦 18:04-19:40

Jonathan reports that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died in prison. He acknowledges that Navalny has been criticised in the past for his views on Ukraine, but points out that he has refined these in recent years and is now firmly against the war. Jonathan observes that even Dmitry Nadezhdin, the Russian opposition leader approved by the Kremlin to run against Putin in the next election has risked the wrath of the authorities by speaking out against Navalny's death.

Russian Authorities Prevent People From Laying Flowers at a Memorial to Commemorate Navalny's Death

🎦 19:40-21:49

Jonathan reports that Russian authorities in Kazan are preventing people from laying flowers at a monument to commemorate the death of Alexei Navalny. He shares a post from Anton Gerashchenko which quotes Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the Russian parliament, who blames the US and EU for Navalny's death. Jonathan sarcastically describes Russia's actions as "liberation".

Russian Soldier from Tatarstan Complains About Receiving Defective Equipment

🎦 21:49-23:49

Jonathan shares a video of a Russian soldier from Tatarstan complaining about receiving a broken-down vehicle. The soldier complains that the only thing that works on the vehicle is the brake lights. He criticises the authorities, claiming that they're more likely to get killed using the vehicle than not. Jonathan draws a comparison between the defective vehicle and efforts to crowdfund vehicles for Ukraine, suggesting that the willingness of people around the world to support Ukraine demonstrates "where the moral calculation is". He criticises the Tatarstan authorities for responding to the soldier's complaints "with indignation".

Jonathan Rants about Tucker Carlson and His Recent Trip to Russia

🎦 23:49-37:47

Jonathan expresses his anger at a recent video made by Tucker Carlson in Russia. He plays a segment from the video which shows Carlson in a Russian supermarket claiming that groceries are significantly cheaper in Russia than in the US. Jonathan takes issue with Carlson's reasoning, arguing that Carlson's suggestion that cheaper groceries are a sign that America is "filth and corrupt and criminal" demonstrates his ignorance of basic economics and the fact that higher prices are often a sign of a more affluent society. He plays a clip from a video by TheKremlinAnnex which refutes Carlson's analysis and highlights the fact that Russia is experiencing a "well-documented food affordability crisis". He shares a tweet by economist Noah Smith which describes Russia as "a dysfunctional, violent, irreligious middle-income country with widespread poverty" - the antithesis of what Carlson appears to be suggesting. Jonathan expresses disbelief at Carlson's decision to speak at the World Government Summit in Dubai, UAE. He criticises Carlson for not challenging Russia's record on human rights, in particular the arrest of Alexei Navalny, suggesting that Carlson is more interested in "self-aggrandizement and money". Jonathan plays a clip of Carlson's interview at the summit, and expresses his disgust at Carlson's suggestion that America is no better than Russia because all leaders kill people. Jonathan points to the numerous murders and assassinations of opposition figures in Russia, and sarcastically claims that because people get murdered in every society, "murder's alright". He concludes his rant by describing Carlson as "a bad man".

🤖❓ AI Debrief (post task) - anything the AI didn't understand

There's no date in the Youtube Title - I have assumed it's 16/02/2024 given that the transcript mentions Alexei Navalny dying.

🤖💭 AI Plan (pre task) - the AI's step by step thought process

This is going to be a long one! I can already see there are a lot of topics to cover and Jonathan goes on a bit of a rant about Tucker Carlson. I'll need to ensure that I keep the topic titles specific/quantified, and the topic summaries concise, but also ensure that I convey Jonathan's insights and personality. I've also noticed that there's no date in the Youtube title - I'll make a note in the Queries section.
