Jonathan starts with the latest figures from the Ukrainian General Staff on Russian losses, which show an average of 550 liquidated personnel per day. Significant losses of Russian artillery systems, vehicles and fuel tanks are also reported, suggesting the Ukrainian campaign against Russian artillery is having an effect. 200 Russian soldiers were reportedly killed in an attack on a stamping plant in Tokmak.

- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Strikes and Air Defence
Explosions were reported in various occupied areas including Donetsk city, Mariupol and Voronezh in Russia. Ukraine sent drones into Russia which were taken down by air defence. 16 out of 17 Iranian Shahed drones were shot down overnight by Ukrainian forces, but some still got through and caused damage in Kryvyi Rih. A Russian electronic warfare system was destroyed in Zaporizhzhia.

Frontline Update
Ukraine is making some gains on at least three sectors of the front line. They have taken control of entrances to Klishchiivka near Bakhmut and parts of the trench network. Heavy fighting is reported in the Vremivka Balka area near Velyka Novosilka. The Russians claim to have taken the village of Nova Zaliska near Svatove.

Russian Command and Morale
Major General Popov, who criticised the Russian senior military leadership, has reportedly disappeared after being summoned by the leadership. His dismissal has caused outrage among Russian military bloggers and exposed issues with Russian force rotation and defensive capabilities. The ISW assesses that Russian defences in Ukraine are likely brittle as a result.

Military Aid
- Ukraine has already received cluster munitions from the US
- Bulgaria is sending 100 APCs to Ukraine and allowing direct arms transfers

Russian Military Aid and Equipment
The Russian Ministry of Defence has sent mobilised soldiers in Luhansk pre-World War 2 era weapons and equipment. Ammunition captured by Ukraine was found to be over 50 years old. However, Russia has also delivered a small number of new Su-35S fighter jets this year. This contrast highlights the challenges facing the Russian military.

- A conflict is brewing between Iran and Russia after Russia supported the UAE in a territorial dispute, upsetting Iran
