🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Ukrainian General Staff data on Russian losses 2nd November 2024
🎦 00:04-01:00⏩
Jonathan reviews the Ukrainian General Staff's figures for Russian losses on the 2nd of November 2024, noting that the usual caveats apply and the data can be found in the video description:
- 1,410 personnel (incredibly high)
- 12 tanks (above average)
- 36 armoured personnel vehicles (almost double the daily average)
- 10 artillery systems (very low)
- 46 vehicles and fuel tanks (average)
- 1 piece of special equipment
Jonathan observes that Russia continues to lose significant personnel and equipment, although some categories are lower than in previous periods.

Andrew Perpetua's equipment loss data (October 2024)
🎦 01:00-03:48⏩
Jonathan discusses Andrew Perpetua's data which shows a large disparity in visually confirmed losses between Russia and Ukraine, approximately a 5:1 or 6:1 ratio favouring Ukraine.
- The data includes 255 items in total, 206 Russian and 49 Ukrainian.
- This includes a breakdown of losses (destroyed, abandoned, captured) across various categories including transport, trucks, APCs, IFVs, tanks, artillery pieces, surveillance, comms and EW equipment, including Starlink.
- Excluding less important items, the ratio of combat asset losses is 89 (Russia) to 8 (Ukraine).
- 64 of the 89 Russian combat losses come from an October summary video, possibly from a large data drop by "Magiar".
Jonathan explains that even if the October losses were spread throughout the month, they still illustrate a significant disparity in equipment losses between the two sides.

Detailed analysis of Ukrainian equipment losses (October 2024)
🎦 03:48-05:27⏩
Jonathan analyses a detailed breakdown of Ukrainian equipment losses from Andrew Perpetua's data, noting the difficulty in zooming in on the image:
- Losses include surveillance equipment, a counter-battery radar (a significant loss), tanks, IFVs, APCs and MRAPs.
- The lost tanks appear to be entirely non-Western (Soviet-era) in origin.
- IFVs lost are also 100% Soviet-era (BTR-82s and BTR-4s).
- APCs lost are a mix of Western-provided and indigenous, including the UK-supplied FV103 Spartan (2 destroyed, 1 abandoned).
- MRAP losses are 50% irretrievable, including Oshkosh M-ATV and MaxxPro.
- A number of civilian vehicles were also lost.
Jonathan concludes that the number of civilian vehicles lost is in line with the usual figures, but the Ukrainian losses may be slightly higher this time.

Detailed Analysis of Russian equipment losses (October 2024)
🎦 05:27-08:27⏩
Jonathan analyses the visually confirmed Russian equipment losses, highlighting the significant number of artillery pieces destroyed, likely due to a video release by "Magiar".
- The data also shows a dozen or more tanks destroyed, around 30 IFVs, and a large number of ATVs and motorcycles.
- Jonathan speculates that the use and loss of numerous ATVs and motorcycles in frontal assaults may indicate a lack of more suitable equipment.
- He notes the continued use of older equipment by Russia, such as D-30 and M46 artillery pieces, and several unknown howitzers.
- A BM-21 MLRS and three MT-12 Rapira anti-tank guns were also destroyed.
- The Ukrainians have captured a T-72B3 tank.
- A large number of "tracked garden sheds" (improvised armoured vehicles) were also destroyed, further suggesting that Russia may be resorting to suboptimal equipment due to shortages.
Jonathan concludes that the data suggests Russia is using its available equipment in a suboptimal manner, potentially due to limitations in their inventory.

Overnight drone and missile attacks on Ukraine (3rd November 2024)
🎦 08:27-17:20⏩, 17:20-20:23⏩
- Ukraine reports shooting down 12 out of 13 KH-101/555 cruise missiles fired overnight by Russia.
- The remaining missile's impact is unknown.
- The attack also included Shahed drones, but it's unclear how many were launched and how many were intercepted.
- Despite high interception rates, debris from downed drones caused damage and fires in Kyiv, particularly in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
- Russia has been varying the drones' flight paths, altitudes, and timings to try and evade air defences.
- There appear to be no significant injuries or deaths in Kyiv from the attacks.
- Jonathan questions whether the recent low rate of long-range missile attacks by Russia is due to stockpiling for a future mass attack or due to shortages. He believes it's likely a combination of both factors.
- Russia may also be having difficulty launching missiles from the Black Sea Fleet, which could be compromised.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister calls for lifting of restrictions on long-range strikes
🎦 17:20-19:20⏩
- Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has urged Western partners to lift restrictions on long-range strikes, citing a surge in Russian drone attacks.
- In September, Russia launched 1,331 drones (44 per day on average).
- This increased to 1,908 in October (62 per day).
- Kuleba highlights the rising threat of Russian drone attacks and calls for the ability to target their launch bases, intercept them in Ukrainian airspace, and lift restrictions to protect lives from terror.
- Jonathan expresses frustration with the West's timid support for Ukraine compared to the assistance Russia receives from allies like North Korea and Iran.
- He criticises the West's restrictions on the use of certain missiles and weapons systems by Ukraine while Russia is allowed to use Iranian drones and missiles and attack civilian targets.
Analysis of Russian cruise missile launch rates
🎦 20:23-23:40⏩
- Jonathan analyses data from Dell's Stats on Russian cruise missile interceptions, noting that this data only reflects intercepted missiles, not total launch numbers.
- He highlights that the initial period of the war saw high launch rates, but this isn't reflected in the data as it wasn't being collected then.
- Russia had a "purple patch" where they were able to launch large waves consistently, but this has decreased over time.
- Gaps between waves have increased, and the waves themselves have become smaller.
- This suggests a possible depletion of stockpiles and challenges in missile production.
- Jonathan anticipates a significant wave of missile attacks soon, but it won't negate the evidence that Russia is struggling to produce missiles at the required rate.
Impact of the war on Ukrainian morale and society
🎦 23:40-24:46⏩
- While Ukraine successfully repelled the large-scale drone attack, Jonathan emphasises that the ongoing nightly attacks are taking a toll.
- President Zelenskyy has shared videos showcasing the damage caused.
- The constant attacks are degrading Ukrainian infrastructure, civilian homes, and livelihoods.
- Jonathan describes this as an "expediting of the second law of thermodynamics", a trend towards chaos.
- He believes the attacks are designed to undermine the order and morale of Ukrainian society.
Ukrainian strikes inside Russia - Orel and Crimea
🎦 24:46-25:44⏩
- There are reports of explosions in Orel, Russia, with footage showing drones overhead. It's unclear what was targeted or the extent of any damage.
- Explosions were also reported in Crimea, specifically at the Hvardiiske airbase near Simferopol and the Saky airbase. Videos show air defence activity but no information on damage.
- Jonathan notes that information about Ukrainian strikes inside Russia is often scarce.
War Mapper analysis of territorial changes in October 2024
🎦 25:44-30:12⏩
- War Mapper's analysis shows that Russia occupied 17.95% of Ukrainian territory at the end of October, a 0.09% increase (538.8 square km).
- This is Russia's largest monthly net gain since the war began, surpassing September's 467.7 square km.
- Russia also retook 85.9 square km of Kursk Oblast.
- The chart of monthly net changes shows that Ukraine has made no net gains since August, while Russia's territorial gains have increased, particularly in Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv Oblasts.
- Jonathan expects the arrival of North Korean troops to impact the situation in Kursk and Kharkiv.
Google highlights locations of Ukrainian military systems on updated maps
🎦 30:12-31:29⏩
- Google has reportedly revealed the locations of Ukrainian military systems on its updated maps (Google Maps and Google Earth).
- Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Centre for Combating Disinformation at the NSDC, announced this, stating that they are contacting Google to rectify the issue.
- Kovalenko criticises Google's actions, noting that Russia is already disseminating the images.
- Jonathan highlights the seriousness of this error, which could compromise Ukrainian air defence systems such as Patriots.
- He calls for Google to be held accountable.
War Monitor comment on World War III
🎦 31:29-31:46⏩
- Jonathan shares a comment from War Monitor suggesting that World War III has already begun and we are in its early stages.
- Jonathan agrees with this assessment, viewing the current situation as a "sleepwalk" into a larger conflict.
Pierre Dupont's fundraising for rebuilding efforts in Ukraine
🎦 31:46-34:07⏩
- Jonathan thanks viewers for their support and highlights the work of Pierre Dupont, a British citizen living in France who has dedicated himself to helping Ukraine.
- Dupont has spent a lot of time in Ukraine, including near the front lines, providing assistance.
- He is currently raising £5,500 to rebuild war-damaged homes in eastern Ukraine.
- Jonathan shares images of Dupont working on a roof, using his construction skills to help Ukrainians rebuild their lives.
- Jonathan encourages viewers to donate to Dupont's JustGiving page (link provided in description).
Lucky Chop's Youtube videos and Gogol Bordello concert
🎦 34:07-34:24⏩
- Jonathan mentions he will be watching Lucky Chop's YouTube videos.
- He recalls seeing Lucky Chop support the Ukrainian band Gogol Bordello at Brixton Academy, describing it as an amazing experience.
