"I've never realized how important handrails are on the edge of like walking down steps and there's a distinct lack of handrails in this complex and it's quite incredible how much I need them."
Hello Team!
Jonathan provides an update on the Ukraine war for 7th August 2023. This is part 2 of the news update.

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Front Line Update
- Kenneth Gregg, a Finnish fighter in Ukraine, provides an update on the front lines, though take it with a pinch of salt as he often refers to open source information.
- Russians fired many missiles on 5th August evening, including Kinzhal and KH101/KH555. Ukraine intercepted most. One guided bomb took out a blood transfusion centre in Kupiansk.
- Heavy fighting reported south and southwest of Lyman as Russians try to advance to Oskil River and Synkivka. Russian tactics described as "meat grinder" with huge losses.
- Intense fighting west of Pershotravneve near Kupiansk and Novoselivka forests. Russians struggling to improve tactical positions.
- In the east, Russians moved troops from Mariinka to north and south of Bakhmut and around Avdiivka. Ukraine slowly seeing results of their cluster bombs use in Klishchiivka.
- Little information from southern front. One Russian attack on Priyutne failed. Fighting continues intensely around Robotyne and Verbove. First Russian defence line broken along Robotyne-Tokmak axis.
- Ukrainian offensive continues through Urozhaine along Velyka Novosilka-Mariupol line. Area south of Staromaiorske to Novodonetske not fully Russian controlled, resembling "Swiss cheese". Ukraine 8km from Serovokon fortification line.
- Ukrainian activity increased on left bank of Dnipro, reaching Hola Prystan. Light infantry troops with mortars could jeopardize Russian connection to Crimea via Armyansk.
Military Aid
- Not much new military aid to report as counter-offensive is underway and equipment already provided.
- Czech Republic transferred an F-16 simulator to Ukraine to train pilots. Zelenskyy personally tested it.
- Boeing has annual production capacity for 10,000 small diameter bombs, of which only ~1,000 go to US orders. If US provides funding, up to 9,000 could go to Ukraine annually, which would be very significant.
- Ground Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB) expected to reach Ukraine around September/October. Production lines had to be created causing delays.
- France providing SCALP cruise missiles to Ukraine, equivalent to British Storm Shadow. Image shows Zelenskyy signing one.
- Germany's Social Democratic Party, led by Chancellor Scholz, called for first time to transfer Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine.
Geopolitics
- Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reports Putin may visit Turkey by end of August. Erdogan expected to try to get Russia to rejoin grain deal allowing exports through Black Sea. The deal is crucial for world food supply.
- Erdogan seen as important player, well positioned between Russia and Ukraine. He has allowed Russian money laundering through Turkey but also provided Ukraine with significant military assistance and used Montreux Convention to close Bosphorus Strait to Russian naval ships, a highly impactful action.
Wrap up
Jonathan thanks viewers for watching and promises to try to provide a front line update later, though he needs to go out and get some sunshine. He shares an aside about his struggles with mobility and "drop foot" due to his MS, realizing the importance of handrails which are lacking where he is staying. He's had to access first aid once already after tripping on his first day.
