"The whole conflict is a numbers game. And Russia have much greater numbers than Ukraine and they've got this kind of elbow room to be able to throw troops to throw human beings at the problem to solve it with sheer numbers and I think Bakhmut is a great example of this happening."
Hello Team!
Jonathan provides an update on the frontlines of the Russia-Ukraine war for January 21, 2023. He begins by sharing the Ukrainian figures for Russian losses, which include 860 personnel, 1 tank, 15 APCs, and 6 artillery systems. Jonathan notes that these high numbers suggest it was a bad day for the Russians.

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND
Ramstein Meeting and Military Aid
- The Ramstein summit led to "optimistic breakthroughs" according to Ukrainian Defence Minister Reznikov, who stated that not all help was announced publicly.
- Demonstrations took place in Berlin demanding Germany "free the leopards."
- Ukrainian crews have been given the green light for training on Leopard tanks in countries other than Germany.
- The US will support the transfer of F-16 fighter jets by allies to Ukraine.
- The UK is considering supplying long-range missile systems to Ukraine.
Long Protracted War
General Mark Milley, head of the American armed forces, stated that it would be very difficult to militarily eject Russian forces from every inch of Russian-occupied Ukraine in 2023. Jonathan believes this is setting the information space for everyone to accept that the war will be long and protracted, likely extending beyond 2023.

Frontline Updates
- Kupyansk to Svatove: Intense fighting continues, particularly around Novoselivske and Kuzmivka. The Russians are using thermobaric artillery systems against Ukrainian positions near Novoselivske.
- Bakhmut: The situation is not looking great for Ukraine. The Russians have likely captured Klishchivka and are putting pressure on Ukrainian forces. However, the ISW assesses that the Russian offensive to capture Bakhmut is likely culminating due to degraded operational capabilities.
- Avdiivka: Russian forces conducted a large attack from Opytne but were repelled by Ukrainian artillery with heavy losses.
- Zaporizhzhia: There are conflicting claims about Russian advances in the Orikhiv area. Some Russian sources claim the capture of several settlements, while Ukrainian sources deny or minimize these claims. The ISW reports that Russian forces lack the necessary equipment and manpower to sustain a prolonged offensive in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
