"At Novo Miozgi, the situation is complicated. It's like your relationship on Facebook, which often means, yeah, it's all up shit creek without a paddle."
Hello Team!
Jonathan provides an update on the frontlines of the Ukraine war as of September 8, 2023. He references his map legend for context on the coloured lines representing areas of control.

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND
Northeast Sector - Kupyansk to Svatovo to Kreminna
- Some Russian gains reported by Andrew Perpetua, but this is a catch up from previous days, not in last 24 hours
- Tough fighting continues around Novoselivka. Geolocated footage shows a Russian tank column was destroyed, losing at least 3 pieces of equipment. This is the 2nd failed Russian attack in a week in this area.
Serebryansky Forest Area
- Andrew Perpetua adjusted his mapping to show Ukrainian gains pushing back Russians, despite pro-Russian mapper Suriyak Maps being less charitable.
- Jonathan believes the Ukrainian shelling has been effective and trusts Perpetua's mapping over Suriyak's, which relies more on Russian MoD claims.
Bakhmut Area
- No major changes north of Bakhmut, focus is on the south
- Ukrainians pushed Russians out of a salient they previously controlled on high ground near Klishchiivka
- Deputy Commander Maxim Zhorin states only 1.5 streets left in Klishchiivka under Russian control. Entire line from Klishchiivka to Kurdyumivka slowly being rolled back by Ukrainians.
- Russians fleeing northeast parts of Klishchiivka. Full liberation expected soon.
- Ukrainians advancing on Andriivka from 3 sides. Some reports of them already entering the village.
- Unconfirmed reports of liberation of Kurdyumivka and Andriivka. Jonathan believes Andriivka could fall within a day but is skeptical on Kurdyumivka at this stage.
- South of Andriivka, Ukrainians pushing Russians back towards the east beyond the railway line, a key defensive barrier for Russians. If breached, could accelerate fall of settlements in the area.
Avdiivka Area
- Ukrainian forces advancing near Opytne according to multiple sources, approaching Donetsk airport
- East of Vodiane, Russians pushed back 700-900m according to Global War Monitor
- In Marinka, Russians making significant gains in northern and western outskirts. Suriyak Maps claims they control area up to the lake. Ukraine now only controls ~20% of the town.
Velyka Novosilka Area
- Andrew Perpetua mapping shows Russian gains around Priyutne, regaining territory previously lost to Ukraine
- Fighting ongoing near Neskuchne. Vostok Battalion reports a "complicated" situation with high Ukrainian losses but they are determined to get results
Orikhiv-Hulyaipole Sector
- No mapping changes from Andrew Perpetua or Suriyak Maps
- Ukrainian General Staff reports of successful actions south of Robotyne
- Unconfirmed reports Ukrainians may have entered Novoprokopivka from north and east
- According to @NOreports, Ukraine liberated 9.35 sq km in areas north of Verbove and northeast of Kopani. Some of this is catch up rather than new gains.
- Russian sources claim Ukrainian advance towards Luhove
- Russians continue building additional defensive lines, including near Romanivske which may be a key Ukrainian objective to break through to allow momentum to build
Wrap Up
Jonathan notes that the Kharkiv and Kherson counteroffensives last year didn't start until August and finished in November, so this year's efforts still have months to develop. The coming days will indicate if Ukraine can build momentum by breaking through 2nd and 3rd trench lines in this sector. He appreciates the audience's support and will provide another update tomorrow.
