🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Losses - 03/11/2024
🎦 00:19-01:29⏩
- Jonathan reviews the Ukrainian General Staff's figures on Russian losses for the previous day (03/11/2024), emphasizing the usual caveats about the data.
- He highlights the high personnel losses, reaching 1,300, which is at the upper end of the "very high" range he usually mentions (1,000-1,300).
- While acknowledging the recent trend of even higher figures (up to nearly 1,700), he still considers 1,300 significant.
- Jonathan suggests that Russia's access to more personnel from North Korea could be mitigating the impact of these losses.
- He notes that both sides are experiencing difficulties, but Russia can still make territorial gains despite their losses.
- Jonathan then goes through the specific losses across different categories (tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery systems, etc.), comparing them to daily averages and highlighting notable figures, like the high number of vehicles and fuel tanks lost (77).
Russian Manpower Shortages - War Translated
🎦 01:29-03:40⏩
- Jonathan shares a translated post from Dimitri on War Translated discussing observations from Russian channels about changes in Russian battalions and companies.
- Key points:
- Reduction in auxiliary units like drones and machine gunners.
- Catastrophic shortage of personnel for "meat assaults."
- Smarter soldiers are trying to avoid frontline infantry roles by joining auxiliary units.
- Sending everyone into meat assaults is considered a bad idea as auxiliary units provide some support, even if not uniform.
- Concerns about a lack of unified communication systems and the use of foreign equipment at command posts.
- Jonathan connects these observations with a testimony he recently watched from a Russian engineer who was forced into a meat assault despite being a specialist.
- He highlights the increasing number of similar anecdotes and testimonies from Russian troops.
- Jonathan emphasizes the significance of North Korea's assistance to Russia, providing 12,000 troops at a critical time. He believes this could have prevented a potential capitulation of the Russian armed forces.
- He urges allies to address this issue and provide significant support to Ukraine, as North Korea's involvement can prolong the war.
Russian Manpower Shortages - Proposed Solution
🎦 03:40-08:41⏩
- Jonathan continues with another translated post from War Translated, which proposes a blunt solution to Russia's manpower shortage:
- Offer impoverished Russians a large sum of money (10 million rubles or $100,000) to join assault units.
- The post acknowledges the "meat assault" nature of these operations.
- Jonathan points out that Russian channels are recognizing the dire situation, even using the term "meat assaults."
- He shares another post that discusses the proliferation of unofficial units in the army, leading to a shortage of fighters for traditional assaults.
- Jonathan emphasizes that these are pro-Russian military bloggers acknowledging the issue of meat assaults, not anti-army individuals.
- He then shares a suggestion from a Russian source to incentivize recruitment for assault units by doubling the regular salary.
- Jonathan notes that Russia has already been offering financial incentives but has started cutting back, possibly due to the cheaper option of using North Korean troops.
- He connects this information with Yuri Ichinat's statement about the Air Force personnel being sent to infantry, suggesting that Russia is facing a critical shortage of soldiers.
- Jonathan reiterates his belief that Russia was close to serious trouble but has been given a lifeline by North Korea.
- He urges allies to take significant action to counter this assistance and help Ukraine.
Distance Strikes on 03/11/2024
🎦 08:41-10:15⏩
- Jonathan shifts focus to distance strikes that occurred overnight on 03/11/2024, citing information from Tim White:
- Ukraine's air defence faced 80 drones and a missile.
- 50 drones were shot down, 27 were stopped by electronic warfare, meaning 3 drones and the missile were not intercepted.
- He notes that explosions and issues were reported in Odessa, with a pro-Russian channel claiming an explosion in Bolhrad, close to the Moldovan border.
- Jonathan also mentions strikes on Kharkiv and Mykolaiv, highlighting the concerning situation in these cities.
Kharkiv Supermarket Airstrike
🎦 10:15-13:04⏩
- Jonathan discusses an airstrike on a supermarket in Kharkiv's Shevchenkivsky district, with 11 people reported injured at the time.
- He shares before and after pictures of the supermarket, mentioning that he might have shopped there himself.
- Jonathan questions the rationale behind targeting a supermarket, suggesting it indicates wanton civilian destruction and constitutes a war crime.
Novichokask - Overnight Strike (02/11/2024)
🎦 13:04-13:46⏩
- Jonathan discusses an incident in Novichokask from the previous night (02/11/2024), noting that information about events isn't always immediately available.
- He shares information about a large fire that followed Russian air defence claims of successfully intercepting 16 Ukrainian drones.
- Jonathan speculates whether the fire was caused by a downed drone hitting infrastructure or a targeted strike.
Ukraine Strikes Korean Military in Kursk?
🎦 13:46-14:29⏩
- Jonathan discusses reports from Nexta, Kyiv Independent and other sources claiming that Ukraine has struck North Korean military targets in the Kursk region for the first time.
- He mentions that the head of the Centre for Countering Disinformation under Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, Andriy Kovalenko, reported this on Telegram.
- While acknowledging the lack of independent confirmation, Jonathan considers it possible that North Korean troops have experienced their first engagement in the conflict.
Russian "Human Safari" in Kherson
🎦 14:29-17:10⏩
- Jonathan highlights the increasing evidence of horrific actions by Russian forces, particularly in Kherson.
- He mentions Brendan Kelly's (from Toch) new article on the subject and the coverage by BBC, Washington Post and other outlets of the "human safari."
- Key points about the "human safari":
- Deliberate Russian attacks on civilians using small drones carrying grenades or mines, or by crashing drones into targets.
- 133 people killed and over 1,300 injured between July and October.
- Kherson's regional governor calls it "targeted terrorism."
- Russian drones often attack ambulances, buses, and civilian cars.
- The use of PFM-1 "petal" mines, banned under international agreements but which Russia is not a signatory to.
- Residents are forced to flee their homes due to the constant attacks.
- Jonathan expresses his horror at these actions and praises the mainstream media for bringing attention to the issue.
Ukraine Medics Told to Remove Markings
🎦 17:10-18:08⏩
- Jonathan shares information about Ukraine instructing its medics to remove markings from their vehicles to avoid being targeted.
- He quotes a source saying that putting a red cross on a car will result in being fired upon within 15 minutes.
- This reinforces the evidence of deliberate targeting of emergency services and medical facilities, adding to the 1,700 (or more) medical centres attacked since the war began.
Sean Pinner on Evolving Russian Tactics
🎦 18:08-18:36⏩
- Jonathan shares insights from Sean Pinner (author of "Live Fight Survive," interviewed twice by Jonathan), who was captured by Russia and later released in a prisoner exchange.
- Sean observes that Russia has adapted its tactics, becoming more effective at using combined arms.
- He expects an increase in simultaneous attacks along the front with larger numbers of troops, despite Russia's manpower and equipment limitations.
- Sean also predicts increased attacks on cities deeper within Ukraine, targeting civilians and infrastructure to pressure the government.
Ukraine's Needs: Air Defence, Jammers, etc.
🎦 18:36-19:15⏩
- Continuing with Sean Pinner's assessment, Jonathan lists Ukraine's critical needs:
- Capacity to deal with Russia's glide bombs.
- Defence against the increased use of chemical weapons (like riot control agents).
- More air defence systems and drone jammers.
- Sean warns that without these, Ukraine will struggle to hold its ground.
Ukraine's Difficult Winter - Energy Security
🎦 19:15-21:13⏩
- Jonathan highlights a report from Euromaidan Press on Ukraine facing its hardest winter yet, with potential daily power outages lasting 8-20 hours.
- He emphasizes the serious risk posed by Russian attacks on Ukrainian nuclear power plants, which currently provide 60% of the country's electricity.
- Any strike on the infrastructure supporting these plants could disable them.
Russian Railway Network in Peril
🎦 21:13-22:46⏩
- Jonathan discusses the perilous state of the Russian railway network, citing reports from Russian news services and a thread from Prune60.
- He mentions a recording of a speech by the head of Russian Railways, Oleg Belozerov, obtained by the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel.
- Key points:
- Belozerov instructs a reduction in the working fleet of cars due to decreasing transportation volume.
- Difficulties faced by Russian Railways since the beginning of the "SVO."
- Many employees have left for war or other jobs due to low salaries.
- Sanctions are hindering the import of spare parts for locomotives.
- Small companies reliant on Russian Railways are facing bankruptcy.
- Jonathan points out that Russian Railways is a monopoly that hasn't seen significant investment for a long time and is now in trouble.
- The VChK-OGPU channel reports restrictions introduced through the ETRAN program, leading to corruption in management structures.
- Lack of transparency from Russian Railways about the allocation of cars.
- Belozerov acknowledges the low bonus amounts (1 million rubles) and the corruption within the system.
- Jonathan connects the railway issues with the broader struggles of the Russian economy, including inflation, rising interest rates, and difficulties in industries like grain and coal.
