Armenia and Azerbaijan Conflict
Jonathan provides an overview of the current conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan:
- Armenia is a Christian nation, while Azerbaijan is Muslim. There are cultural and historical differences between them.
- Russia has traditionally supported Armenia more, but Armenia has recently sought help from the US, causing tension with Russia.
- The conflict is centred around the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has a large Armenian population.
- There have been wars over this region in the late 80s/90s and in 2020. Azerbaijan pushed Armenia out in 2020 but there are still around 120,000 Armenians living there.
- Azerbaijan seems to be trying to take full control of the area again, with reports of drone strikes and shelling.
- Armenia is calling for the UN and Russian peacekeepers to intervene. Protesters in Armenia's capital Yerevan are calling the Prime Minister a "traitor" for not helping Nagorno-Karabakh.
- The Armenian PM insists Armenia has no army in Nagorno-Karabakh and will not take rash actions. He accuses Azerbaijan of trying to drag Armenia into a war.
Trump's Comments on the Russia-Ukraine War
Jonathan discusses recent comments made by Donald Trump about the Russia-Ukraine war in an interview:
- Trump said he could have made a deal before the war started to prevent deaths, suggesting Russia would have been allowed to keep some Ukrainian territory like Crimea and Donbas.
- Jonathan strongly disagrees with this "art of the deal" approach. He feels Trump is ignoring Ukraine's own wishes and what its people want from any peace deal.
- By stating upfront that he expects Russia to keep Crimea and Donbas in a deal, Trump is weakening Ukraine's negotiating position. It's like "showing your hand" upfront in a negotiation.
- Jonathan compares it to haggling at a market - you should start with a low offer, not immediately meet in the middle. Trump has already given away Ukrainian territory before even starting talks.
- He shares a quote from Madeleine Albright's book "Fascism" which criticises Trump's transactional view of international diplomacy as a "competitive struggle for advantage". Albright argues countries must frequently cooperate to solve global challenges.
- Jonathan passionately agrees, arguing that humans have succeeded through cooperation, not just competition. He believes Trump's approach would lead to Ukraine getting "shafted" in any deal.
