"Contemporary wars are missile wars. States must adapt and prepare accordingly, investing in both their own offensive strike capabilities and defensive countermeasures."

Hello Team!

Jonathan introduces this as an extra video providing additional nuggets and tidbits of information to give a greater understanding of the war in Ukraine.

Mick Ryan's observations from Ukraine

  • Ukraine is fighting the war as a national effort using military, diplomatic, information, technological and societal means in a democratic way
  • Despite leveraging all national means, Ukraine is fighting within the laws of war, which is important for legitimacy domestically and internationally
  • Ukraine's way of war is a unique hybrid of Soviet, Western and Ukrainian cultures, concepts and technologies
  • Innovation and adaptation from the ground up is a key part of Ukraine's approach
  • Those leading Ukraine's war effort have a hybrid experience from Soviet and NATO institutions as well as expertise gained since 2014

Drug use in the Russian army

  • At least 1 in 10 Russian soldiers in Ukraine are reported to be using drugs including cannabis, bath salts, methadrone and amphetamines
  • Soldiers use drugs out of boredom or to cope with army rations. Professional soldiers are less prone to drug use than mobilised troops
  • Drug dealers, including from the occupied territories, openly advertise and supply drugs to Russian troops, even to the front lines
  • In the Donetsk and Luhansk "republics", illegal and pharmaceutical drugs are widely available
  • Although some soldiers have been arrested, enforcement is weak. Those caught are often sent to "Storm Z" penal battalions as punishment, which is almost a death sentence

Long-range strike data

  • Russia has launched a minimum of 3,967 long-range strike (LRS) weapons against Ukraine in 12 months, of which 3,249 were intercepted (82% success rate)
  • The highest number of LRS in a single day was 131 on 17 Nov 2022. Intensity decreased Jan-Apr 2023 but increased again May-Sep 2023
  • Use of cruise missiles has decreased, likely due to stockpile shortages. Shahid-136 drones now make up 56% of LRS weapons
  • Ukraine has intercepted 87% of drones, 77% of cruise missiles but only 42% of ballistic missiles
  • There is a strong correlation between number of LRS launched and intercepted, indicating Ukraine's air defences can handle large-scale attacks
  • Ukraine still struggles to defend against supersonic cruise missiles and needs more Patriot systems to counter this
