🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian and Ukrainian losses
🎦 00:09-06:41⏩
Jonathan begins by highlighting that the Russia are attacking along most of the front line, capitalising on four months of significantly reduced military aid from the US and Europe. He expresses concern that this gives Russia an advantage, as time is something that Ukraine doesn't have. He goes on to explain that until recently, Ukraine has had to replace a lack of equipment with humans. This is not ideal, as weapons can replace humans in warfare to some degree. The more weapons Ukraine has, the less humans they have to commit to the front line. The Ukrainian General Staff has reported significant Russian losses, which is positive for Ukraine, but there are concerns about Ukrainian losses too. Jonathan uses Andrew Perpetua's Oryx loss figures to compare losses. He points out that Russia lost more equipment, but the Ukrainian equipment was of a much higher value. There has been a large strike by Ukrainian HIMARS on the left bank of the Dnipro River, in the Ileshki Sands area, which has resulted in significant Russian losses, including around 60 soldiers from the 810th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade. There has also been speculation that Ukraine may be using GLSDBs as well as HIMARS for strikes in the Kherson area.

Stoltenberg: Ukraine has the right to strike Russian military targets outside Ukraine
🎦 15:08-17:25⏩
Jonathan describes comments made by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that Ukraine will have the right to strike Russian military targets outside Ukraine, as hugely significant. Although Stoltenberg specifically referred to strikes from F-16s, Jonathan argues that it shouldn't matter whether the missiles are launched from the air or the ground, and this paves the way for Ukraine to use other missiles such as Storm Shadow.

🎦 17:26-19:52⏩
Jonathan discusses the suicide of Russian milblogger Murs, who is believed to have taken his own life after being publicly criticised by propagandists such as Solovyov for speaking out about the realities of the situation on the front line. Murs had shared a letter from servicemen of the 1487th Regiment, an IRF armed formation which fought in Avdiivka, detailing how 70% of the regiment had been killed, wounded or were missing. The letter also highlighted the lack of weapons, transport and medical care for the unit.
