"The entire last six months of Ukrainian defense in Bakhmut is a shaping operation for the coming counteroffenses."
Hello Team!
Jonathan has already done another extra video today on the Patriot missile system but wanted to do a separate Ukraine war update extra to provide additional insights and analysis to help viewers gain a greater understanding of the war.

Debunking Disinformation
- A video has been circulating showing drone footage of three Russian soldiers walking, one gets injured by a drone-dropped munition, and the other two then beat him up and steal his stuff
- However, the explosion looks fake/CGI as the ground is unchanged before and after
- There are also issues with the soldiers' shadows that suggest the video has been manipulated
- Be wary of claims from both sides and your own confirmation bias - the tendency to ascribe more value to evidence that supports your already held views
The Power of Russian Propaganda
- Americans and Europeans should be more aware of the ubiquity of genocidal rhetoric on Russian state TV as documented by Julia Davis
- Showing 2 hours of this propaganda to pro-Russian or anti-Western intervention friends/family could help shift their perspective as it's hard to feel moral sentiment towards those advocating mass murder of Ukrainians
- This terrible rhetoric needs to be more widely seen by people who are wavering in their views to counter Russian narratives
Analysis of Ukrainian Advances Around Bakhmut
Retired Australian General Mick Ryan provides analysis of recent Ukrainian advances around Bakhmut:
- It could just be a local counterattack exploiting Russian weakness rather than a major offensive
- Russian forces may have culminated and are unable to sustain offensive operations, though they still retain some tactical momentum
- This could be the start of Ukrainian counteroffensives but only time will tell - strategic shaping for this began back in 2022
- Ryan believes the gains are likely local counterattacks but the defense of Bakhmut itself could be a key element of Ukrainian preparations by fixing Russian attention and forces
- The attacks show Ukraine is ready for larger fights and if they maintain their creativity, determination and leadership, Russia is in big trouble
Wildlife Segment: Geese Join Ukrainian Soldiers
- Footage shows three geese following Ukrainian soldiers trying to move quietly through a thicket
- This reminded Jonathan of a story from Ancient Rome where sacred geese alerted Romans to an attack by Gauls trying to scale cliffs at night, allowing the Romans to repel the attack
- The geese are surprisingly quiet but could have caused problems if they started honking loudly
- Jonathan believes the Ukrainians would not have harmed the geese both to avoid alerting the enemy and based on past respectful treatment of wildlife by Ukrainian soldiers
Wrap Up
Jonathan will discuss the differences between the S-300 and S-400 missile systems in the next extra video as requested by a viewer comment. He signs off until next time.
