"It's like seeing someone run up to, I don't know, an old lady on the street, try and grab a handbag, start punching her, and then the old lady starts defending herself. And then eventually the old lady punches the thug back and the thug goes 'well that's not going to sort out peace initiatives is it you've just gone up and punched'"
Hello Team!
Jonathan provides an update on the Ukraine war frontlines for August 9, 2023, noting there is a lot of information to sort through to determine what is happening, particularly in the northeastern sector from Kupyansk through Svartova to Kramina.

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND
Kupyansk Sector
- Pro-Russian military blogger Rybar claims Ukrainian artillery struck the village of Kota despite a recent border crossing opening, which Jonathan finds infuriating and compares to a thug attacking an old lady and then complaining when she defends herself
- Russian units have expanded control south of Vilsana and Persia (Provenmyshki) according to Rybar, which Jonathan notes are significant gains in the northeastern arc on his map
- There are claims the Ukrainians have the high ground and line of sight on these Russian positions to hit them with artillery and tanks; analyst Andrew Perpetua believes the Russians will struggle to hold these gains due to poor logistics and Ukrainian fire
- Ukrainians have reportedly advanced northwest of Liman-Pershchiy, adding 0.6 square kilometers of liberated territory
- The ISW suggests the Russian offensive goal in Kupyansk may be to draw Ukrainian forces away from other fronts rather than gain substantial territory; Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister reports heavy Russian losses in the area over the past week
Novoselivsk and Robotna
- Fighting continues over control of Novoselivsk, west of Kuzmivka, with reports of Russian incendiary munitions being used which refutes claims of full Russian control
- In the Robotna area, the Ukrainians have made advances and are fighting on the northern outskirts according to Russian sources, though the Russians claim to have pushed them back; geolocated footage shows the Ukrainians using cluster munitions to clear tree cover for assaults
Bakhmut Sector
- The Ukrainians have stalled in their advance on Rostlivka north of Soledar and may have lost 1 square kilometer to a Russian advance, concerning Jonathan as taking the heights would threaten Russian positions
- South of Bakhmut, Syriac Maps claims a significant Russian counterattack pushed Ukrainians back from the western side of a canal, though this is unconfirmed; fighting continues in Klishchivka and Andriivka which the Russians are struggling to hold
- Russian sources claim they have stabilized lines north of Bakhmut and are attacking Ukrainian positions in the south, holding back assaults on Andriivka and Klishchivka
Avdiivka and Donetsk Sector
- Geolocated footage from August 7 shows minor Russian advances near Krasnohorivka according to the ISW
- Andrew Perpetua's map shows some Russian gains southwest of Avdiivka and east of Vodyane
- The Russian MoD claims they repelled Ukrainian attacks on Mikhilska
Zaporizhia and Kherson Fronts
- Ukrainians have made advances in Staromykhailivka and Urozhaine according to Andrew Perpetua's map, with a foothold in northern Urozhaine confirmed by other sources
- In Kherson, the Ukrainians maintain bridgeheads across the Dnipro near the Antonivsky bridge and islands south of the Konka River, pushing towards Oleshky
- A Russian recon group under "Tomov" was ambushed near Kozachy Laheri with 25 killed/captured; the Ukrainians have attacked the area with artillery and may control the western part of the village, moving to encircle Russian units
- Analyst Trent Telenko believes Russian logistics in Zaporizhia are nearing collapse, forcing them to pull airborne units from Kherson, while the Ukrainians can reinforce both fronts
Wrap up
Jonathan notes it is a mixed bag across the frontlines, with Russian attacks in some areas and Ukrainian progress in others, but the Russians seem to be struggling overall. He thanks viewers for their support and signs off to get some food.
