Jonathan provides an update on the Ukraine war for May 29, 2023. Russian losses for the previous day included 4 tanks, 11 APCs, 10 artillery systems, 1 MLRS, 2 anti-aircraft warfare systems (a TOR system and an S-300), 61 drones, 15 vehicles and fuel tanks, and 2 pieces of special equipment. The Ukrainian General Staff reported destroying reconnaissance drones, hitting missile troops and artillery units, as well as ammunition depots and electronic warfare stations.

- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Losses and Ukrainian Attacks
Footage shows Ukrainian FPV drones targeting Russian logistics trucks, vans, and SUVs behind enemy lines to disrupt their supply lines. Electronic warfare equipment was also destroyed in Bakhmut/Soledar. Russian howitzers were hit in temporarily occupied Belgorod, geolocated inside Russia, showing Ukraine's focus on counter-battery fire. The Shebekino checkpoint near the border was attacked by Ukrainian kamikaze drones, with Russia claiming no casualties, though footage suggests otherwise. Dozens of locations in southern Ukraine, including Mariupol, Berdyansk, and Melitopol, were struck by Ukraine, taking advantage of their increased range capabilities.

Massive Drone and Cruise Missile Attack
Russia launched a significant drone and cruise missile attack overnight, with Ukraine shooting down 37 out of 40 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles (92% interception rate) and 29 out of 35 Shahed-136 kamikaze drones (82%). However, some still got through, causing damage. A military object, presumably an airfield, was hit near Khmelnytskyi, with five aerial vehicles damaged and fuel/lubricant warehouses on fire. The attack spanned from Lviv in the west to Kyiv, with ambulances called out in Mariupol. Russia is being more strategic with the timing and directions of their attacks to try to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses.

Bakhmut Update
Footage shows the massive destruction in Bakhmut, which Russia claims to have "liberated." Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, indicated a possible delay in the planned relief of his forces by regular Russian troops in the city. This could be due to Ukrainian attacks hindering the process or the need for Wagner to hold their positions as Ukraine pushes on the flanks. The Washington Post reported Wagner forces departing from Bakhmut city center, with regular Russian personnel taking over.

Russian Tank Losses and Adaptations
Heavy tank and armored vehicle losses have led Russia to change its tactics, demonstrating increasing caution and efforts to hide their tanks. They are largely using tanks as artillery and fire support or for raiding, rather than for breakthroughs and exploiting gains. While this reduces losses, it limits Russia's offensive capabilities. The Russians are also modifying their tanks to make them harder to detect by anti-tank guided missiles and changing their fighting times to dawn and dusk when thermal signatures are less pronounced.

Military Aid and Diplomacy
- Canada issued a Ukraine Sovereignty Bond, which could serve as a model for European support.
- Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov made a persuasive appeal to Australia for tanks and Hawkei vehicles, using flattery, shared values, and emotional language.
- The head of Russia Today called for the assassination of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham after he praised U.S. support for Ukraine. Russian propagandists also advocated destroying Kyiv and Ukraine.
- Erdoğan's victory in the Turkish presidential election may not be the best outcome for Ukraine, as the opposition was more NATO and Western-oriented. However, Turkey has been supplying equipment to Ukraine while also maintaining ties with Russia.
