"Russia needs to stop it. You can't invade a country and then say, 'Stop defending yourself. If you stop defending yourself, we'll have peace tomorrow.' And all the land that we've just taken after our invasion."
Hello Team!
Jonathan reviews the latest Ukrainian general staff figures for Russian losses, which show a drop in personnel losses to 400 for the previous day. Artillery losses remain high, with 485 pieces lost so far in May according to commenter Thierry Schmidlin. Special equipment losses are also at record monthly levels.

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Drone attacks
Last night saw the biggest single Shahed drone attack yet, with 52 out of 54 drones shot down, over 40 of them above Kyiv. Russia appears to be using the drones to locate Ukrainian air defense systems. When drones are hit, the debris can cause fires on the ground, as seen in Kyiv where a warehouse roof caught fire over a 1000 square meter area.

Russian artillery losses
There is extensive footage showing Russian artillery being destroyed by Ukrainian FPV drones, confirming the high loss figures reported. A 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade montage alone shows numerous Russian artillery pieces being taken out.

Ivan Kurs incident
The status of the Russian reconnaissance ship Ivan Kurs remains unclear after the claimed Ukrainian drone boat attack. Russian sources say the ship is back in Sevastopol undamaged, but analysis of footage suggests the ship may have taken a substantial hit. The marine tow truck "Commander" is still in the area of the attack and not providing position updates, possibly guarding the wreck. Jonathan remains agnostic on what actually occurred.

Attacks across Ukraine and Russia
Numerous Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine have been hit by Ukrainian HIMARS and Storm Shadow missiles recently, including Mariupol, Melitopol, Volnovakha, Polohy, Bilmak, and Vasylivka. Russian territory has also been struck, with a reported drone attack on an oil refinery in Krasnodar and a large fire 300km north of Moscow.

Scott Ritter's Russian tour
Controversial figure Scott Ritter continues his tour of Russia, praising Putin as "the greatest leader of all time" and suggesting Russia should be asked for forgiveness. Jonathan dismisses Ritter's credibility entirely, saying anyone promoting his views "can take a long walk off a short pier."

Counter-offensive indicators
A Ukrainian presidential advisor says the first steps of the counter-offensive have begun, with supply lines and depots being targeted in "shaping operations." The intensity of attacks is increasing as Ukraine prepares the battlefield. Jonathan notes this is the expected "calm before the storm" period between the Russian offensive ending and the Ukrainian one beginning.
