Estonia considers sending troops to Ukraine
🎦 00:13-04:03⏩
Jonathan discusses an article in "Breaking Defense" which claims that the Estonian Government is seriously considering sending troops to Ukraine in non-combat roles.
- The article quotes Mavis Roll, Estonia's National Security Advisor.
- The Estonian Defence minister, Hannah Pevka has denied the claims and stated that the "Breaking Defense" outlet may have misinterpreted Roll's words.
- Jonathan believes that smaller NATO nations like Estonia should start sending small numbers of troops to Ukraine as he believes Russia will be less likely to escalate if larger NATO countries are not involved.
- Jonathan uses the analogy of "Boiling a lobster in a pot" to illustrate how Russia may react to a slow, incremental increase in NATO troop numbers.
USA Military Aid Update
🎦 04:03-06:11⏩
- US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan has stated that the USA will announce a new aid package in the coming days and that discussions are ongoing with allies regarding more Patriot Air Defence Systems. However, he indicated that the number of Patriots being discussed was in the region of 1 or 2 rather than dozens.
- Colby Badouin has commented that orders for Patriot batteries should have been placed long ago, as they are vital for defending Ukraine.
- Zelensky has stated that Kharkiv urgently needs two Patriot Air Defence Systems to protect its citizens from daily attacks.
- Jonathan believes Blinken needs a "Wake up call" about how vital military aid is for Ukraine.
- Jonathan is unsure how sustainable Russia's attacks in the north will be in the long term. He shares information from a Ukrainian commander who claims that Ukrainian forces are taking out 99% of Russian forces in the Zaporizhzhia area.
Ukraine to receive new long range weapons this summer
🎦 06:11-07:23⏩
- US Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, has said that Ukraine will receive new, long range weapons this summer.
- Jonathan believes this could relate to F16s and that there is a lag between aid announcements, manufacturing and delivery. He made similar observations a few months previously.
Romania: Patriot Air Defence Systems
🎦 07:23-07:48⏩
- There have been rumours that Romania may provide a Patriot Air Defence System to Ukraine.
- Romania's Prime Minister has stated that whilst the Defence Minister is reluctant to send one, the final decision will be made by the Supreme National Defence Council so there is still a chance one could be sent.
Denmark: Patriot Air Defence Systems
🎦 07:48-08:20⏩
- Denmark's Prime Minister, Mata Fredricksen has stated that Ukraine needs another 5-6 Patriot Batteries to defend itself and has called on other European countries to follow Germany's example by sending more to Ukraine.
- She believes it's better to have Air Defence Systems in Ukraine than in NATO countries, and that Russia is the main threat.
- Jonathan wholeheartedly agrees and believes everything should be given to Ukraine to defend itself.
Germany Military Aid Update
🎦 08:20-09:09⏩
The German Ambassador has stated that Ukraine is to receive the following military aid from Germany:
- 1 x IRIS-T Air Defence System (due in May, delayed from April)
- More IRIS-T Systems in the next two years
- Gepard Artillery
- Skynet system
- A third Patriot system in late June
Jonathan is pleased but notes that this is all very late in coming.

🎦 09:33-10:16⏩

Spain: Military Aid Update
🎦 10:16-11:15⏩
- Spain will transfer 10 Leopard 2 Tanks to Ukraine according to El Pais newspaper.
- Jonathan is unsure whether these are newly refurbished or part of a previously announced package.
- A new aid package is due to be announced on 30th June and will include large caliber artillery ammunition, light and heavy machine guns, protected wheeled and armoured infantry vehicles, anti-tank weapons, field artillery shells, anti-tank and anti-aircraft surveillance systems, and weapon stations to protect against drones.
- Jonathan believes Spain have recently placed an order with Rheinmetall for artillery ammunition, presumably to backfill what they are sending to Ukraine.
EU: Artillery Ammunition Production
🎦 11:15-12:16⏩
- Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for Internal Market has said that the EU is on track to produce more than 2 million artillery shells on European Territory.
- Jonathan is pleased by this but notes that this will take time to organise, as the EU requires unanimous voting to agree on funding which then has to be raised before contracts can be agreed with private manufacturers.
Finland to re-establish TNT Production
🎦 12:16-13:01⏩
- Finland is re-establishing TNT production due to a global shortage as a result of the war.
- It is less safe than IMX 101 and 104 but has the same explosive properties and is essential for use in artillery shells and mortar rounds.
- The only active TNT Plant in Europe is Nitrochem in Poland. Ukraine's Zarya plant in Rubizhne is occupied by Russia.
- Hellenic Defense systems in Greece are also re-establishing TNT production at their L'Avrio plant.
- The USA currently only produces explosive filler IMX, RDX and HMX at Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Tennesse but there are plans to re-establish TNT production at Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Virginia.
Switzerland: Ukrainian Refugees
🎦 13:01-13:31⏩
- Some politicians in Switzerland are calling for the readmission agreement with Ukraine to be upheld, which would result in 11,000 Ukrainian men of conscription age to return to their homeland from Switzerland.
- Jonathan is unsure of the legalities of this given Switzerland is not in the EU.
Russia: Cabinet Reshuffle
🎦 13:31-16:46⏩
Jonathan discusses the recent cabinet reshuffle in Russia.
- Shoigu has replaced Patrushev, who has moved to an advisory role.
- Belousov, an economics man, has replaced Shoigu.
- Jonathan questions whether this is a sign of Russia moving towards a more China-centric approach given Belousov's experience in this area.
- He does not believe Belousov is a technocrat as he has no military experience but does believes this is a good move for Russia as procurement is crucial and Belousov has the economic and manufacturing experience.
- Jonathan predicts that Gerasimov (current commander in chief) will not last long in his role - he'd be amazed if he lasts longer than a couple of weeks.
- Jonathan believes that Russia need to focus on procurement of quality equipment, innovation and they need it quickly. Belousov's expertise will be crucial and China will play a key role in this.
- Jonathan believes that Belousov's experience with China will be a key asset and will be of net benefit to Russia and bad news for Ukraine.
