Council of Europe and EU aid for Ukraine
🎦 00:21-02:37⏩
- The new Chief of the Council of Europe, Alan Betsey, has stated that support for Ukraine is his number one priority
- He has allocated €160m to support Ukraine's energy industry
- Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the EU will provide €60m for humanitarian needs and €100m for repairs to energy infrastructure and renewable energy
- Switzerland (not an EU member) has pledged $68m to Ukraine for digitalisation of healthcare, education, state statistics and humanitarian de-mining.
German Military Aid: Medical Aid and Treatment of Wounded Soldiers
🎦 02:37-05:21⏩
- Germany has provided €50m for the treatment of wounded Ukrainian soldiers in German hospitals
- 1173 wounded soldiers and civilians have so far been evacuated from Ukraine for treatment in Germany
- Jonathan explains that this is sensible from the German perspective as it is a form of inward investment, stimulating the German economy
- He highlights the benefits of providing such aid in this way as it helps Ukraine but also benefits the German economy (a win-win) as opposed to simply giving money.
German Military Aid: Confusion over German Military Aid Packages
🎦 05:21-15:12⏩
- Germany is reported to be close to approving €400 in Military aid for Ukraine due to the worsening situation in Ukraine
- However, other reports suggest an aid package totalling €1.4bn is being prepared, including ammunition, Marder drones and spare parts (Max 24)
- Other sources suggest 20 Leopard tanks, Gepard anti-aircraft guns, 60,000 155mm shells will be included in the package
- Jonathan highlights analysis from "German Aid to Ukraine" who clarifies the situation, suggesting that media reports are inaccurate as they include previously announced aid packages and that the €1.4bn figure is likely made up of several tranches of previously announced aid.
- However, it appears that there will still be a significant amount of equipment sent to Ukraine.
- This includes 10 Cheetah SPAAGs, 6 Panzerhaubitze 2000s, 4 Zuzana SPGs, RCH-155s, Vector drones, anti-drone systems, 30 Leopard 1A5 tanks, FFG MRAPs, trucks, tankers, assorted vehicles, MK556 assault rifles, medical equipment and a field surgical team.
Ukraine: Ukrainian modified M113 Destroyed
🎦 15:12-16:12⏩
- Jonathan shows a photo of a destroyed M113 in Kursk Oblast, Ukraine.
- The vehicle appears to be one captured from Russian forces, now operated by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
- This particular variant is an M113A3 fitted with a new Ukrainian made turret which offers superior protection from all angles for the gunner.
Estonia: Estonian Defence Company to establish Anti-drone facility in Ukraine
🎦 16:12-16:53⏩
- Estonian defence company Frankenberg Technologies will establish an anti-drone production facility in Ukraine
- This follows several other defence companies who are investing in Ukraine including Rheinmetall, BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman.
- Jonathan notes that this makes good business sense, making it easier to produce and maintain equipment in country.
Ukraine: Main Battle Tank deliveries to Ukraine
🎦 16:53-20:34⏩
- Jonathan reviews a chart from JR highlighting the number of tanks pledged and delivered to Ukraine
- 864 tanks have been pledged in total, of which 589 are confirmed as delivered
- He reviews the chart in detail highlighting the number and types of tanks sent by various countries, noting that some of this is for funding the refurbishment of tanks and that it is not always clear where the tanks originated or who funded them.
- Jonathan notes the significant contribution made by Poland in terms of tanks.
India: India supplying Artillery Shells to Ukraine
🎦 20:34-21:43⏩
- Despite public denials, India has been confirmed as supplying artillery shells to Ukraine
- This is despite protests from Moscow.
- It appears that India is supplying 155mm shells as part of the Czech shell initiative.
NATO: Viewer comment - Impact of Trump's policies on European Defence Spending.
🎦 21:43-25:27⏩
Jonathan discusses a comment left by a viewer "I have a Brain and I Use it". The viewer states:
- “We can thank Trump for the new SAMP/T and I think that’s a kind of sort of sarcastic… we can thank Trump for the new SAMP/T and that will kill off the Patriot sales in the EU so SAMP/T… there’s going to be a new SAMP/T that’s going to be, uh, so they are saying the best at shooting down ballistic missiles… So arrival of the Patriot PAC-3, these will be so much cheaper for each country to buy. And of course, the long tale of missile supplies will be a good money owner for France for decades… I doubt any American actually understands the full economic implications and subsequent ramifications of Trump’s, ‘we would encourage Russia to attack’ speech.”
Jonathan notes the importance of this comment and elaborates:
- Trump’s bombastic rhetoric about NATO allies not “paying their fair share” has undermined trust in the US commitment to European security.
- His rhetoric has spooked European nations, leading them to believe that they can no longer rely on the US for security.
- Jonathan explains that this has led to European countries increasing defence spending, with a focus on buying equipment within Europe (as opposed to US equipment).
- He explains that this makes logical sense, as it’s in a country’s best interests to invest in their own defence industries, creating jobs, boosting the economy, and generating tax revenue.
- In effect, Trump’s isolationist policies have had the opposite effect to that which was intended. European nations are now less reliant on the US for arms sales, damaging the US defence industry in the long-term.
Russia: Estimated Russian Missile Production
🎦 25:27-26:17⏩
- According to Forbes, Russia produces 42-56 ballistic and 90-115 cruise missiles per month, along with 500 Shahed-136 drones per month.
- Jonathan questions the accuracy of this data given that Russia is currently using more Shahed drones per day than this data suggests are produced each month.
- He concludes that the data is either wrong, or that Russia is still receiving large shipments of Shahed drones from Iran.
Wrap up
