Jonathan provides the latest update on the Russia-Ukraine war for 9th November 2023. The usual caveats apply to the Ukrainian General Staff figures for Russian losses.

- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Losses
- 780 Russian personnel lost, still a high number
- 8 tanks lost, fewer than previous days, possibly due to attrition or Russians being more cautious
- 22 APVs lost, another day of high losses in this category
- 29 artillery systems lost as Ukraine continues targeting them
- 3 MLRS and 2 anti-aircraft systems lost, well above average
- 10 drones, 47 vehicles/fuel tanks, and 5 pieces of special equipment lost
Ukrainian Losses
- A Ukrainian CB90-40C infantry fighting vehicle was destroyed in the Bakhmut direction
- A Ukrainian Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicle was damaged but not destroyed by a Russian ATGM near Vuhledar
Russian Artillery Mishap in Kherson
Russian artillery in the Kherson region reportedly shelled their own positions after relying on maps from online sources like pro-Ukrainian OSINT accounts. This highlights the poor communication and lack of situational awareness among Russian forces. The original map appears to have come from Twitter user Andrew Perpetua, which was reposted by other accounts. The incident has been a source of amusement for Andrew.

Russian Officer Losses
- 3 high-ranking Russian VDV officers were killed in a Ukrainian strike on their command post in southern Ukraine, though the intended target, General Teplinsky, was not hit
- The former head of the Luhansk People's Republic National Police, Colonel Mikhailo Filippenko, was killed in a car bombing in Luhansk
Fires in Russia
A large fire broke out at a mining and processing plant in Bratsk, Russia. This follows a massive mall fire in the same city the previous day, continuing the trend of significant fires in Russia.

Strikes and Shelling
- An explosion occurred in Kryvyi Rih, hitting critical infrastructure outside the city with no injuries reported
- Russia admitted to soldiers being killed by Ukrainian shelling in the Bryansk and Belgorod border regions
- A facility in occupied Donetsk was struck twice by Ukrainian HIMARS, allegedly destroying a Russian drone operator training center and "troll factory". The location had been previously disclosed by Russian state media TASS.
- The village of Bohoyavlenka in Donetsk oblast was shelled by Russia with cluster munitions, killing 3 civilians
Prisoners of War
- Several videos show Russian prisoners being captured by Ukraine in Donetsk and Vuhledar
- Ukraine is opening a new POW camp due to the large influx of Russian prisoners, with conditions meeting international humanitarian law standards
- The "I Want to Live" project claims 17,000 Russians have been removed from the front lines, through surrender, capture or desertion
- Prisoner exchanges have allegedly been blocked by Russia in recent months
Damage to Ukrainian Medical Facilities
Over the course of the war, 1,468 Ukrainian medical centers have been damaged with 193 completely destroyed. More than 350 ambulances have also been destroyed, with another 125 captured in occupied territories. There is evidence Russia has purposely targeted medical facilities as they did in Syria.

Ukrainian Election Postponed
The Ukrainian constitution prohibits holding new presidential elections during martial law, meaning Zelensky will remain president even after his official term expires. While there are arguments for upholding democratic processes, Jonathan believes postponing the election is sensible to allow the government to focus on the war effort and Zelensky to continue drumming up international support, as well as for security reasons.
