Hello Team!

Jonathan thanks the community for their support of the live stream interview with a combat medic trainer from Global Augmentation. The campaign went from $100 to almost $3000 as a direct result of the interview. Jonathan was quite moved by the community's generosity.

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA

  1. These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
  2. These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
  3. All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
  4. Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
  5. Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
  6. Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
  7. Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
  8. All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
  9. Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.

Russian Losses

According to Ukrainian general staff figures, Russian losses for the previous day included:

  • 600 liquidated personnel
  • 6 tanks
  • 15 APVs
  • 22 artillery systems (a heavy day for Russian artillery losses)
  • 1 MLRS
  • 9 anti-aircraft warfare systems (a catastrophic loss)
  • 21 drones
  • 23 vehicles and fuel tanks
  • 7 pieces of special equipment (a significant increase, likely intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and electronic warfare equipment)

Footage of Russian Losses

Jonathan shows footage of:

  • A T90 tank being taken out by what looks like a bonus or smart munition that splits into two and does a top-down attack. This precision-guided munition gives Ukrainians a competitive advantage over the Russians who are using "dumb" munitions.
  • A tank being blown up in a massive explosion. The cause of the huge blast is unknown.
  • A dozen POWs captured by Ukrainians in one exchange in Avdiivka. The Ukrainians must have a large exchange fund now.

Fires and Sabotage in Russia

  • A hospital in Yekaterinburg was evacuated after smoke enveloped the Ural Institute of Cardiology.
  • Potential sabotage in Siberia where a diesel locomotive and gasoline tanker were derailed at Sokur station in the Novosibirsk region. Siberia has a long history of anti-Moscow feelings.

Missile Strikes on Lviv

The Russians sent 10 Kalibr cruise missiles into Ukraine overnight. 7 were intercepted but 3 reached their targets, causing significant damage in Lviv, western Ukraine. The death toll is at 4 with a number of people injured. Rescue services worked through the night. President Zelensky promised a strong response to this unacceptable attack on the historical city of Lviv. It is unclear if the targets were military.

Ukrainian Strikes on Russian Targets

The Ukrainians hit many targets in the Donetsk region over the last 24 hours, destroying ammo and fuel depots, cargo trains, and military equipment. This was confirmed by Russian sources. Key targets included:

  • Ammo depot in Makiivka (hit for the second time)
  • Oil base in Makiivka resulting in a huge explosion and fire
  • Railway station next to Avdiivka
  • Administration building in Volnovakha (a logistical centre)

Frontline Update

  • President Zelensky said the counter-offensive should have started earlier but was delayed by the slow supply of Western weapons. In some areas, they cannot even think about an offensive due to lack of suitable weapons. He appealed for more weapons like long-range tactical missile systems.
  • Around Klishchiivka (south of Bakhmut), the Ukrainians have occupied a dominant, fortified height at the entrance to the village. The Russians there must either surrender or die as escape routes are mined or blocked by Kadyrovites.
  • North of Bakhmut, the Ukrainians made gains in the forests near the M-03 highway. The forests have been reduced to mud by constant shelling.
  • On the Avdiivka axis, Ukrainian troops liberated around 1km into Russian-occupied territory towards Opytne.
  • In the Velyka Novosilka sector, Pryiutne is reportedly under Ukrainian control but not visually confirmed. Attacks are ongoing at Staromaiorske and Ukrainians entered the outskirts of Rivnopil.
  • On the Kherson axis near Antonivskyi Bridge, no changes were noted. The Russians dropped guided bombs on dachas where Ukrainian troops were entrenched.

Military Aid to Ukraine

  • The US is expected to announce it will send cluster munitions to Ukraine, which is low on artillery shells. While effective against dug-in Russians, human rights groups say unexploded bomblets pose a threat to civilians.
  • Turkish howitzers could be on the way to Ukraine. The T-155 Fırtına is a modified version of the Korean K9 Thunder.
  • Using electronic warfare systems, the Russians have learned to suppress GPS-guided ammunition and HIMARS MLRS. Defence Minister Reznikov has asked partners to solve this jamming problem.
  • About 100 Ukrainian soldiers finished artillery training in Denmark, which will donate all 19 of its CAESAR 8x8 self-propelled howitzers. These feature an automated loading system allowing a firing rate of 6 rounds per minute.
  • Canadian soldiers bid farewell to Ukrainian defenders at the end of their training before they return home.

Russian Mobilisation Plans

Russia plans to mobilise 500,000 soldiers according to Ukraine's general staff. This has been expected for a long time and is already happening through a "crypto mobilisation". However, mobilising such a large number will be very difficult logistically and in terms of equipping them, given the shoddy equipment provided in previous mobilisation waves. It will also likely force more people to flee Russia, affecting the economy.

NATO and Geopolitics

  • At the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, the Lithuanian president hopes commitments will be made to Ukraine that will not disappoint them. However, Ukraine cannot be accepted into NATO at this time as Article 5 cannot be triggered retroactively.
  • Jens Stoltenberg's term as NATO Secretary General has been extended by a year as a successor could not be agreed upon.
  • The US blocked the UK's Ben Wallace as a candidate, allegedly because the UK began promoting training Ukrainian pilots on F-16s without US consent.
  • President Biden is now pushing for Ursula von der Leyen, the current head of the European Commission, to succeed Stoltenberg. While supported by France and Germany, there are concerns over her poor handling of the German defence ministry from 2013-2019.

Mineral Deposits in Norway

A huge phosphate rock deposit discovered in Norway reportedly contains enough minerals to meet the global demand for batteries and solar panels for the next 100 years. Up to 70 billion tons of phosphate rock may have been uncovered alongside other strategic minerals like titanium and vanadium. Although not renewable themselves, these resources allow the creation of renewable energy technology and could help countries reduce reliance on hydrocarbons from Russia.
