Hello Team

🎦 00:00-00:30

Jonathan is recording from an airport today so apologies in advance for any sound issues!

Russian Losses

🎦 00:30-02:28

The Ukrainian General Staff has reported significant Russian losses for the previous day with over 1000 personnel lost, 17 tanks and 35 armoured personnel vehicles. Jonathan thinks this is a result of Russian attacks. He notes that 1020 personnel losses is a huge number - at the beginning of the war this would have been a record, although the highest daily loss to date is 1380. 18 artillery systems were also lost by the Russians which Jonathan describes as "not the biggest number but it's still going to be significant". 41 vehicles and fuel tanks which is a huge number and will add to Russian logistical problems.

Ukrainian Losses

🎦 02:28-03:30

Jonathan compares the daily losses reported by the Ukrainian General Staff with statistics compiled by Andrew Perpetua who surveys social media with his team to verify losses. According to Andrew Perpetua's data, Ukrainian losses were very low - just one T-64 tank, one Bradley (abandoned) and a few civilian vehicles. In contrast, Russian equipment losses were much higher with a number of tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and APCs lost. Jonathan notes that it is the quantity of the losses that are problematic for Russia.

Luhansk Oblast Strike

🎦 03:30-03:57

Confirmation that Alexei Potelischenko, the so-called Minister of Emergency Situations for the Luhansk People's Republic, was killed in the HIMARS strike on the Adriatica cafe in Alchevsk. According to reports, the strike hit a birthday party for Russian officials. Jonathan notes that the Ukrainians must have had some good intelligence to have been able to carry out the strike.

Aftermath of a Strike

🎦 04:06-05:10

Footage is shown of the aftermath of a strike, although the location and who carried it out is unknown. The footage shows destroyed vehicles and military equipment. A comment alongside the footage criticises the lack of Russian counter battery fire and isolation of the battlefield which has resulted in significant equipment losses, including drones and electronic warfare equipment.

Bradley fighting in Avdiivka (Donetsk Oblast)

🎦 05:21-05:54

Footage has been released showing a Bradley fighting in Avdiivka in Donetsk Oblast, which was subsequently hit by a mine. The Bradley continues to fire at Russian positions, but is eventually immobilised. The crew were able to escape. Jonathan thinks this is probably the same Bradley that was listed as abandoned in Andrew Perpetua's equipment loss statistics.

Russian Black Sea Fleet Losses

🎦 05:55-06:38

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Ukraine has put 33% of the Russian Black Sea Fleet out of action since the start of the war. 24 warships and one submarine have been disabled since 24 February 2022. Footage is shown of the Russian Novichokask landing ship being raised from the sea. The ship was catastrophically destroyed at Feodosia in Crimea and Russia is now attempting to salvage it.

Other Strikes

🎦 06:38-07:26

Jonathan mentions that there haven't been any major missile or drone strikes for a while. The most recent significant strike hit a hotel in the city of Zolochiv in Kharkiv Oblast. The hotel was destroyed by an S-300 missile strike, killing a two-month old baby boy and injuring three women. Seven houses, civilian infrastructure, two administration buildings and several cars were also damaged in the strike. Jonathan doesn't know what the intended target was but notes that a lot of anger has been expressed at the death of the baby.

Ukrainian Government Reshuffle

🎦 08:06-08:29

Zelensky has announced that he will be carrying out a major reshuffle of the upper echelons of the Ukrainian armed forces. The Ukrainian Veterans Affairs Minister, Yulia Laputina, has submitted her resignation, which is thought to be linked to the reshuffle.

EU and Portuguese visits to Ukraine

🎦 08:38-09:13

The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, has arrived in Kyiv for a surprise visit. Jonathan welcomes the visit - he sees this is good news. A Portuguese delegation consisting of the Foreign Minister, Joao Cravinho and Education Minister, Joao Costa also arrived in Kyiv yesterday. Jonathan notes that Portugal could be doing more to help Ukraine and hopes that the visit will be productive.

US Senate Delays in passing Ukraine Aid Bill

🎦 09:29-10:14

A bipartisan deal in the US Senate to unblock military aid to Ukraine is on the brink of collapse. Republicans are stating that the vote, scheduled for Wednesday, is too soon and that they need more time, whilst pressure mounts from Donald Trump. Jonathan expresses his frustration, pointing out that they have had 4 months to sort this out. He thinks it's a travesty and plays into the hands of Putin. He is concerned that the USA's standing in the world is being damaged and that people are getting increasingly frustrated with them.

Biden to veto Israel Bill

🎦 10:15-10:43

Biden is looking to veto a bill that would have seen Israel extracted from a larger bill that would have supported the Indo-Pacific region, Israel, Ukraine and the US Southern border. The bill was an attempt to appease the Republicans without having to do anything to help Ukraine. Jonathan reports that Biden has stated that unless the bill includes the wider aspects, he won't sign it.

Liz Cheney criticises Republicans for Blocking Ukraine Aid

🎦 10:43-11:45

Liz Cheney, former Republican lawmaker, has criticised her party for blocking the Ukraine/border deal. Jonathan is a fan of Liz Cheney (although they sit on opposite sides of the political spectrum) and recommends her book which he says gives a fascinating insight into the movement of the GOP away from it's traditional values over the last couple of years. Liz Cheney is quoted as saying, "On Trump's orders Republicans in congress are rejecting the border security deal abandoning america's allies in ukraine trump and the GOP are losing the war on purpose in an inexcusable betrayal that will strengthen America's enemies for years to come." Jonathan finds himself in the strange position of agreeing with Liz Cheney and thinks something weird is going on in US politics.

Elliot Cohen criticises Congressional Republicans

🎦 11:46-12:38

Elliot Cohen, Chair of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), has criticised Congressional Republicans for blocking the border/Ukraine/Israel deal, stating that they have "blood on their hands". Jonathan recommends CSIS, describing them as a good resource who have been really involved in analysing the war in Ukraine. He agrees with Elliot Cohen and is riled by the situation.

Russia helping North Korea access International Financial Systems

🎦 12:38-13:01

According to the New York Times, Russia is helping North Korea unblock frozen funds and connect with international financial institutions.

EU and IFC funding for Ukraine's private sector

New Ukrainian "Shulika" Drone Unveiled

🎦 13:19-14:27

More information is available about the new Skylab UA drone that Jonathan mentioned in an earlier video. The company Brave One has unveiled it's new "Shulika" Mark 6 drone. It's a strategic strike drone with precision and superior night vision with a range of 10km and a 6kg payload. To put that into context, the FPV drones that carry RPG warheads have a 2.5kg payload. It is also resistant to electronic warfare. The drone is undergoing NATO codification and there are plans to enhance it's AI system and cameras for better target identification.

France to Supply Ukraine with Mirage 2000 Fighter Jets

🎦 14:27-16:21

France is preparing to supply Ukraine with 12 Mirage 2000 multi-role fighter jets. Ukrainian Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, is expected to visit Paris this week to finalise the agreement with his French counterpart, Sebastien Le Corneau. The original plan was to transfer 6 aircraft but this has been doubled to 12. The deal will also include missiles, training and contributions from other Ramstein format allies, such as the USA and Canada. Jonathan is very happy about this development, pointing out that this will bring Ukraine into the French arms ecosystem. He recalls that when Oleksii Reznikov was Defence Minister, the plan had been to only procure two Mirages, with the main focus being on securing F-16s and Gripen jets. He thinks the Ukrainians have realised that they need planes quickly and that the Mirage 2000 is a perfectly decent airframe to utilise.

France to Increase Military Aid to Ukraine

🎦 16:21-17:13

French Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, has announced that France intends to increase military aid spending to Ukraine and expand the range of weapons it provides. Jonathan welcomes the news, highlighting that many critics have been saying that France (the world's second largest arms exporter) hasn't been doing enough to help Ukraine. Jonathan also reports that there may be some delays to the EU's €50bn aid package for Ukraine as Germany wants to provide funding bilaterally rather than through the EU.

US Increases Artillery Shell Production

🎦 17:13-18:39

Jonathan reports that the US has doubled artillery shell production to support Ukraine, increasing monthly production from 14,000 to over 28,000 per month, exceeding it's own targets and is on course to reach 100,000 per month by 2025 thanks to a new factory in Texas that uses new technology. Jonathan is frustrated that a new factory in Texas owned by a Republican senator who supports Ukraine is not receiving more support given the focus on border security in the US at the moment.

Howard Buffett Donates to Ukraine

🎦 18:39-19:26

Philanthropist Howard Buffet is donating $500 million of his personal fortune to Ukraine. He previously donated $150 million in 2022. Jonathan is impressed by the donation, pointing out that often individuals can achieve more than entire countries. He then laments the fact that Elon Musk is a "douchebag" as it would be great to have him on side.

Wrap Up

🎦 19:26-19:59

Jonathan thanks viewers for their support and says that this will be the last video of this type for a while due to extenuating circumstances. He plans to give daily updates on his experiences in Ukraine instead.
