- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Ukrainian General Staff Report - Russian Losses (20/04/2024)

Jonathan reviews the Ukrainian General Staff report of Russian losses for the previous day, noting that 950 personnel were lost, a significant increase on previous days. 16 tanks and 41 artillery systems were also destroyed which Jonathan considers a good result for the Ukrainians. Jonathan highlights that Andrew Perpetua's detailed loss figures haven't been released yet.

Neptune Missile Strike - Sevastopol

Jonathan reports breaking news that a Neptune missile has struck Sevastopol. Footage shared online shows a fire burning in the distance at Sevastopol Bay, but it is unclear what is burning. The Russian-appointed head of Sevastopol claims a small fire broke out on one of the ships but was quickly extinguished. It is unclear if this is true. Jonathan is pleased about the strike, noting that this confirms Ukraine is using the Neptune missiles that they have been developing. Jonathan believes this strike will be the first of many and will force Russia to move their Black Sea Fleet from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk.

Russian Reconnaissance Drones Target Ukrainian Airbase - Aviatorska Air Base, near Dnipro

Jonathan shares news from Fighter Bomber, Early Doors that a Ukrainian airbase near Dnipro was struck by Russian forces. A Russian reconnaissance drone was able to penetrate deep into Ukrainian airspace to provide targeting information. The strike, which targeted an S300 launcher and three Mig-29s (one out of service), was successful. Jonathan notes that whilst there is debate over whether all of the Migs were operational, the loss of the S300 launcher is a blow for the Ukrainians. Jonathan is concerned by how far the Russian drones were able to travel and believes that this needs to be addressed urgently.

Ukrainian Strike on Russian Command Post - Bakhmut

Jonathan reports that a Ukrainian strike on a Russian command post near Bakhmut on 16/04/2024 killed eight high-ranking officers from the 331st Parachute Regiment, 98th Airborne division.

Ukrainian HIMARS Destroys Russian S-400 (Debated)

There are unconfirmed reports that a Ukrainian HIMARS strike may have destroyed a Russian S-400 air defence system (radar and control centre). Footage of the strike is inconclusive and some analysts believe that the target may have been a decoy. Jonathan notes that if it was just a radar and control centre that was hit, the lack of secondary explosions could be explained by the nature of the target.

Damaged Patriot Missile System Flown from Poland to US

A damaged Patriot missile system has been flown from Poland to the US (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) for repairs. The damage, which is understood to be limited to the generator and a control box, was sustained in Ukraine.

Indian Citizen Killed Fighting for Russia in Ukraine

Anton Geraschenko has reported the story of an Indian citizen, Asfan, who travelled to Russia in November 2023 after being promised a well paid job but who was tricked into fighting for the Russian military. He was subsequently killed in Ukraine in March 2024. The Indian Embassy has confirmed his death to his family. Jonathan highlights that Asfan's story is not unique, and several other Indian citizens are understood to have been tricked into fighting in Ukraine. Geraschenko has highlighted that Russia has been recruiting heavily in South Asia, offering young men steady employment and good salaries. This is a problem for Ukraine as they do not have the resources to recruit in the same way.

Distance Strikes - Odessa, Kursk & Mariupol

Jonathan reports that in addition to the earlier Neptune missile strike on Sevastopol, there have been further distance strikes over the previous 48hrs. Odessa and Chornomorsk were targeted by Russian forces, with grain export infrastructure and a private house hit. Separately, explosions have been reported in Kursk with footage showing a large fire. Lastly, explosions were also heard in Mariupol. Jonathan notes that information about distance strikes can be patchy and we do not always get to see footage or find out the full details.

Atesh Partisans Report Casualties - Sevastopol

Atesh partisans in Sevastopol report that there were Russian casualties (several dead and many injured) following the earlier Neptune missile strike. Ambulances were seen travelling to the scene.
