"These things can change sometimes several times in a day."
Hello Team!
Jonathan provides an update on the Ukraine war as of September 1, 2023. The update is a bit belated as he was waiting for more news to come out. It's evening time in the UK and night time in Ukraine. Jonathan's aunt is out shopping and the boys are playing PlayStation, so he's taking the opportunity to do some mapping.

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND
Northeast frontline
- Pro-Russian sources claim Russians have pushed Ukrainians back in Sinkivka and may control the northern part of the town, but this is not confirmed by other sources
- ISW mentioned Russian claims in this area from the previous day
- Ukrainians report positional battles north and northeast of Sinkivka. During a counterattack, they pushed Russian troops back from several positions along two forest belts
- On the Kizlivka and Kotylirivka sector, Russian infantry and reconnaissance groups periodically enter the grey zone but Ukrainians repulse attacks without changes
Bakhmut area
- Ukrainians reportedly advanced but there are also claims of Russian advances, although ISW has not observed this
- The city itself is being hemmed in by Ukrainians according to their general staff, with Russians trapped and hit by ranged ordnance
- No movement reported in Zalezyansky along the E40 highway since the previous update
- Fighting continues around Klishchivka:
- Yesterday, Russians pushed their defensive line forward along the heights
- ISW cites Russian claims of pushing Ukrainians back several kilometers and regaining lost positions, but this is not evidenced
- Andrew Perpetua's mapping shows Ukrainians pushed Russians back east of Klishchivka to the railway line between Andriivka and Kurdyumivka, which is significant and shows Ukrainians have momentum in this area
Avdiivka area
- Yesterday, Ukrainians had success north of Avdiivka, pushing Russians back around Krasnohorivka past the railway line
- Minor Ukrainian gains continue around Novoselivka according to Andrew Perpetua's mapping, pushing Russians back to lines held prior to the start of the Kherson offensive in early May
- This gives Ukrainians breathing room around Novoselivka which is key to not allowing Russians to encircle Pervomaiske
Marinka area
Things seem to be heating up again in Marinka after a quiet period as the counteroffensive started. The area is appearing in news feeds again.

Donetsk frontline
- It's been quiet in terms of news coming out of this area
- One report mentions Ukrainian forces making small advances south of Rivnopil, reaching defensive lines near waterways, but the meaning is somewhat vague
- This could refer to a ravine that has been heavily mined where Ukrainians pushed Russians back previously
- No changes reflected on the map yet. The area still seems to be pretty quiet and Ukrainians are likely still refitting and taking an operational pause
Robotyne area
- Still lots of fierce fighting but less news compared to previous days
- ISW cites Russian milblogger claims:
- Russian forces (including 7th Guards Airborne Division) repelled 2 Ukrainian assault groups that attempted to break through northwestern outskirts of Vuhledar. Some sources described these as reconnaissance in force operations.
- Ukrainians advanced closer to western outskirts of Vuhledar but have not penetrated prepared Russian defensive positions west of the settlement
- Ukrainians advanced in an unspecified forest area near Robotyne but Russians still hold positions on the southern part of the settlement
- Defmon notes contradictions in Russian claims about controlling southern Robotyne, with a Russian channel mentioning fighting south of the village
- Ukrainian forces are concentrated on slowly advancing and solidifying territorial gains between Vuhledar and Novoprokopivka
- Vuhledar has been under heavy shelling for 3 days
- Progress is expected to be slow. There were rumors of Ukrainian forces geolocated east of Vuhledar but they may have been reconnaissance groups that were pushed back by Russian counterattacks without combined arms support
- Video footage shows destroyed Russian trench lines and dugouts south of Robotyne from a few days ago. Jonathan speculates these positions are no longer held by Russians after Ukrainian artillery strikes
Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts
- No significant news from Pyatykhatky
- ISW cites Russian milblogger claims:
- Russians attempting to establish positions on islands in the Dnipro River delta while Ukrainians continue limited activities on the left (east) bank in Kherson oblast
- Russians may have captured a foothold on Bilharud Island southwest of Kherson city and maintain control over Velykyi Potemkin and Maly Potemkin islands
- Small Ukrainian groups continue operating on the left bank near Antonivsky Bridge and are trying to gain a foothold northeast of Sadove
- It's unclear if Ukrainians were pushed back from their initial foothold on the left bank or remain operational around Dachi/Antonivsky Bridge areas
- Fighting continues over islands in the delta southwest of Kherson city
Wrap up
In summary, not a huge amount of news today but Jonathan will provide further updates if anything major happens. He expects fairly consistent progress with hopefully some gains around Robotyne and minor gains in Bakhmut.
