"The West can finish this thing. The rules are not constraining the players in this game."

Hello Team!

Jonathan starts the video with a sombre tone, noting that things are not looking good for Ukraine at the moment, particularly politically in the US. He is feeling angry about the situation.

Ukrainian General Staff Figures

The Ukrainian General Staff have released their latest figures on Russian losses which are high:

  • 1,270 personnel
  • 13 tanks
  • 40 APVs
  • 37 artillery systems
  • 6 MLRS (one of the highest daily figures)
  • 1 aircraft
  • 51 drones
  • 49 vehicles/fuel tanks
  • 5 pieces of special equipment

Jonathan notes that even if these figures are reduced by 30%, they still represent a good day for Ukraine in terms of degrading Russian forces. However, the figures are somewhat skewed without knowing Ukrainian losses.

Foreign Fighters Lost

Foreign fighters have been lost fighting for Ukraine, with the largest contingents being:

  • Georgians: 50+
  • Belarusians: 40+
  • Americans: 20-30
  • British: 10+
  • French: 10-20
  • Polish: 10+

There is discontent in Belarus with Lukashenko, and Georgia has previously been in conflict with Russia, which may explain the high numbers from these countries.

Russian Aircraft Shot Down

Pro-Russian Telegram channels are reporting that a Russian Su-24M bomber was shot down near Snake Island/Odesa, possibly by a Ukrainian Patriot air defence system. A Russian An-26 search and rescue aircraft was searching for the crew. Jonathan speculates that positioning Patriots in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions could heavily constrain Russian air activity. He believes Ukraine has or will have more than the 2 Patriot batteries some are claiming. There are also unconfirmed claims that 1-2 Ukrainian MiG-29s have been shot down which would be a huge loss if true, but the sources seem unreliable.

Other Military Developments

  • A Russian Snitsa electronic warfare station was hit by Ukrainian HIMARS in the Kupyansk area. This will benefit Ukrainian drone usage.
  • The latest Russian assault north of Avdiivka ended in disaster for them, with at least 2 MTLBs destroyed and 12-40 soldiers killed. There have been several failed Russian attacks in this area recently.
  • Russia has captured a US Bradley IFV manufactured in 2022. The soldiers involved in its capture were awarded medals.
  • A Russian An-12 transport plane had to make an emergency landing in Russia due to a steering problem. Russian aviation is having regular issues at the moment.

Overnight Drone Attacks

Russia launched 48 Shahed drones at Ukraine overnight, of which 41 were shot down. The 7 that got through caused damage in 3 regions:

  • Mykolaiv region was badly hit, with fires at a service station and tyre fitters. A warehouse and sports centre were also hit in Ochakiv.

The drones that were shot down also caused damage when they crashed, with fires in Snihurivka (where Mark and Olena's parents are from) and Ochakiv. A DTEK energy site that has been hit multiple times recently was struck again, causing some power outages.

Targeting of Aid Centres

Andrew Perpetua reported on his livestream about Russian strikes on civilian aid centres in Kherson and Kherson regions:

  • An S-300 missile hit a cinema in Kherson that was being used as an aid distribution point, killing 2 people on the street and injuring 1. The strike was captured on video.
  • In Kherson region, Russia waited for volunteers to start handing out food at an aid station then shelled it with Grad rockets for 2 hours. 1 person died and 5 were injured, including an 84-year old woman in critical condition.

Jonathan and Andrew are very depressed and angry about Russia purposefully targeting humanitarian efforts like this.

Crimea Strikes Aftermath

Following the Ukrainian strikes on Crimea 2 nights ago, a Russian Kilo-class submarine was spotted being towed from Feodosiya to Sevastopol in daylight, which is not normal procedure. Heavy cloud cover has prevented satellite imagery of the damage caused by the strikes so far. One thermal power plant in Ukraine was shelled for the 6th time in 6 weeks.

Zelenskyy's Defiant Video

On Ukraine's Armed Forces Day, President Zelenskyy posted a defiant 6.5 minute selfie video of himself walking around central Kyiv. He congratulated the troops, saying "Behind us are over 600 days but ahead is victory". The video seemed to have no obvious security and was likely intended as a message to Putin, contrasting Zelenskyy's confidence with Putin remaining isolated. Jonathan saw it as Zelenskyy saying "Screw you" to Putin.

Russian Use of Child Labour for Weapons

Return to top⤴️In the Russian region of Tatarstan, children as young as 14 have been involved in producing parts for weapons such as mine tails in schools and a "Children's Creativity Centre". The parts are 3D printed and finished by hand. Jonathan finds this "distasteful stuff".

Wrap Up

Jonathan ends this part of the update there, promising a second part to follow later. He is evidently feeling quite low and angry about the current situation, particularly the political issues in the US which he will discuss more.

🤖❓ AI Debrief (post task) - anything the AI didn't understand

The transcript was clear with no parts that I did not understand. A couple of small points: I wasn't sure if "Snijerivka" and "Sniherivka" refer to the same place with different spellings or are separate places. I didn't know what Jonathan meant by "Nothing says creativity like being made to create weapons of war for the Russian state." but assumed it was sarcasm.
