🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.

🎦 06:37-08:17⏩
- BBC Russia and Mediazona investigation identified over 82,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine based on obituaries and social media announcements.
- This is a conservative estimate and does not include LPR and DPR militias.
- Jonathan compares this to 15,000 Russian deaths in the Afghanistan conflict, which was considered too much for the Russian population at the time. He notes that now, due to an iron grip over information spaces and a pliant population, around 100,000 deaths are not causing significant unrest.
Kursk: Russian attack repelled by 225th Assault Battalion
🎦 08:17-08:54⏩
- An attempted Russian breakthrough in the Kursk region using Tiger armoured vehicles was repelled by the 225th Assault Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

🎦 08:54-10:28⏩
- Satellite imagery shows a battery of three destroyed Russian 2S19 Msta-S self-propelled guns, likely in the Pokrovsk district.

- Ukrainian artillerymen set a world record for firing range with conventional field artillery, hitting a target at 70 kilometers using a Volcano guided projectile.

- The video of one bridge being destroyed shows a massive explosion.
- Jonathan expresses concern that this tactic will be a thorn in the side of the Ukrainians.
Elon Musk accused of suppressing post about Russian attack on fire engine
🎦 12:43-13:28⏩
- Andrew Perpetua accuses Elon Musk of suppressing a post showing Russian drone operators targeting a fire engine responding to a fire at a school in Antonivka, Kherson.
- Jonathan expresses his disgust at the Russians for targeting a fire engine and calls them "barbarian savages."
Language Learner: High cost of Russian offensive playbook
🎦 13:28-19:36⏩
- Jonathan refers to a thread by Language Learner, whom he previously interviewed, explaining the high cost of the Russian offensive playbook.
- The thread cites an infographic by Vladimir Danchenko on the Battle of Avdiivka, showing massive Russian losses per square kilometer of occupied territory.
- 0.6 tanks per square kilometer
- 1.3 armoured vehicles per square kilometer
- 154 soldiers per square kilometer
- For every square kilometer they advance, they are losing 154 people (150,000 in total in that direction).
- The Battle of Avdiivka is described as one of the largest battles in history in terms of armoured vehicles lost.
- Russian losses in the Avdiivka area are close to the number of three armies of the Western General Military District as of 2022.
- In October 2023, Russia defined the offensive in Avdiivka as the main axis of its offensive campaign to capture the Donetsk region.
- During the last few weeks of the offensive, Russian losses were estimated at 13,000 soldiers, rising to 47,000 in February 2024.
- The visually confirmed losses of the Russian army during the 13 months of fighting in the Avdiivka region amount to 1,800 units of armour, with real losses even greater.
- Jonathan emphasizes that these are visually confirmed losses, and the real losses are likely much higher.
- The thread argues that Russia is losing more tanks at Avdiivka than any country in Europe has in its army.
- The thread concludes that the Avdiivka offensive may become one of the largest offensives in history in terms of armoured vehicles lost.
- Jonathan highlights the incredible cost to the Russians despite their territorial gains.

Overnight attacks: Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Bryansk, Taganrog
🎦 20:05-25:32⏩
- Dnipropetrovsk: Air defence shot down two unspecified missiles. Jonathan notes a possible marked reduction in Russian drone attacks for two consecutive nights.
- Zaporizhzhia: A Russian ballistic missile attack on a hospital at peak hours resulted in at least 14 victims, mostly women. The death toll later rose to seven, with one person brought back to life.
- Bryansk: A Ukrainian strike hit a Transneft oil depot, causing a large fire. This is not the first time this depot has been hit. The depot is actively used to supply the Russian army.
- Taganrog (Rostov Oblast): Attacked by drone missiles, with at least 10 explosions reported. The 325th Aviation Repair Plant was reportedly hit, with 14 vehicles burned. Locals reported that shelters were locked and sirens sounded after the strikes.
- Jonathan expresses hope that these strikes will continue, putting the Russians on their knees by January 20th.
Analysis of Russian territorial gains and losses
🎦 25:32-28:44⏩
- Russian forces captured 702 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in November, almost five times more than all gains earlier in 2023.
- Russia now controls 18% of Ukraine, including Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk.
- However, Russia's losses have increased proportionally.
- Vladimir Danchenko's analysis shows that Russia's losses have increased tenfold compared to the first months of the war, reaching 1,000-1,500 soldiers per day in 2024.
- Jonathan discusses the possibility of a Pyrrhic victory for Russia, where they exhaust themselves despite their gains.
- He also speculates that Ukraine may have reserves they are not deploying to the contact line, saving them for when the Russians culminate.
General updates: Finance, Chasiv Yar, Kursk, Crimea, Syria
🎦 28:44-37:55⏩
- Finance: Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko says Ukraine has enough funds and weapons to resist until at least mid-2025, even if USAID stops.
- Chasiv Yar: Russian troops are intensifying human wave attacks, aiming to break through Ukrainian defenses. Ukrainian forces are holding strong near Turetsk, causing significant Russian casualties.
- Kursk: Ukrainian forces have neutralized 37 mechanized Russian assault attempts near Malaya Lachnya in a single month. Chinese Desert Cross 1000-3 buggies have been spotted heading to Kursk, possibly indicating preparations for sabotage.
- Crimea: Russia has reduced its barge barriers protecting the Crimean Bridge by half in a month.
- Syria: The pressure on Russia in Syria, where they are losing influence and bases, may impact their operations in Africa and the Mediterranean. There are reports of Ukrainian involvement in assisting the Syrian opposition.
- Jonathan expresses concern about the potential impact of a Trump presidency on the conflict, given the anti-Ukraine sentiment among some of his advisors.
