"That really is a significant challenge for the Ukrainians. So if we have a look at the topographic map, here we have the dam up in this area being burst. And that comes down, floods down here, feeds into this dam. And as you can see, in fact, we make this full screen. You get a better understanding."

Hello Team!

Welcome to another frontline update video for May 26, 2023. Let's dive right into the latest developments.

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND

Northeast Sector - Kupiansk to Svatove to Kreminna

  • Russians conducted unsuccessful offensive operations in Masiutivka. The area has disagreement between mappers on control.
  • Masiutivka itself is only a couple houses. Ukrainians have advantage of high ground to the west of the Oskil River.
  • In Bilohorivka, south of Kreminna, Russians made some gains according to Syriac Maps. However, ISW cites geolocated footage from May 24 showing Ukrainians capturing positions on the eastern outskirts.

Bakhmut Sector

  • Syriac Maps shows Russian gains north of Bakhmut, south of the reservoir, over last 4 days after Ukrainian withdrawals from some previously recaptured positions on the western outskirts.
  • Little certifiable information on northern flanks. Possible Russian gains west of city itself but could just be map adjustments.
  • ISW notes heavy fighting continues on the flanks. Russians trying to capture Ivanivske and Klishchiivka.
  • Wagner fighters being supplanted by Donetsk People's Republic forces in the city. Impact of this change remains to be seen.

Avdiivka Area

  • Russian forces conducted unsuccessful attacks near Avdiivka, Novokalynove and Krasnohorivka.
  • Geolocated footage shows Ukrainian troops may hold positions south of Avdiivka near Opytne.
  • Additional footage shows DNR forces firing at Ukrainian positions in Avdiivka.

Dam Destruction at Karlivka

  • The dam at Karlivka on a reservoir has been destroyed, likely by the Russians using a glide bomb or missile.
  • This dam also serves as a road, so its destruction affects the highway connecting the Avdiivka area.
  • The destruction has caused a huge rush of water. Combined with recent heavy rains and already flooded ground, this poses a major challenge.
  • The water flows down to a reservoir near Kurakhove which is likely already full. If it can't hold the extra water, it could flood areas to the west, affecting a key highway and logistically important areas for Ukrainian operations.
  • This strategic hit by the Russians could significantly hamper Ukrainian preparations for a counteroffensive in western Donetsk.

Marinka

  • Geolocated footage shows Russian forces making marginal advances towards Polihovychna Street in western Marinka.
  • A Russian tank was shown firing from Russian-controlled areas towards the west.
  • Tough fighting continues in Marinka as Russians try to push Ukrainians to the western outskirts.

Other Frontline Areas

  • No confirmed or claimed Russian ground attacks in western Donetsk or Zaporizhzhia.
  • Lots of missile, drone, and long-range attacks in rear areas like Melitopol, Berdiansk, Mariupol, Tokmak, Polohy, Volnovakha.
  • Crimea also attacked, especially Dzhankoy railway hub and Sevastopol. Effectiveness of Ukrainian drone attacks unclear.

Wrap Up

The situation in Bakhmut remains fluid and bears watching to see if Ukraine tries to gain land or just fix Russian troops in place. Please like, subscribe and share this video. Thanks for listening and I'll be back with more updates soon.

🤖❓ AI Debrief (post task) - anything the AI didn't understand

No major parts of the transcript were unclear to me. The main area of some uncertainty is around the level of Russian vs Ukrainian control of certain specific locations in Bakhmut and Avdiivka, as different sources cited seem to disagree on the precise frontline positions.
