🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Losses
- 480 KIA (killed in action) which is slightly down from recent days
- 5 tanks, 18 APVs (armoured personnel vehicles) taken out, likely reflecting high intensity fighting in areas like Robotyne and Orikhiv
- 17 artillery systems destroyed, a good day for Ukrainians. If this rate continues, Russians will struggle to replace losses.
- 1 anti-aircraft warfare system, 24 drones and 2 cruise missiles shot down
- 27 vehicles and fuel tanks destroyed, showing Ukrainians are targeting Russian logistics
Ukrainian vs Russian Equipment Losses
Andrew Perpetua's list shows more Ukrainian losses than Russian today, likely due to Ukrainian offensive operations in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk Oblasts. Losses include:
- 2 Strela short-range air defence systems
- Several IFVs (infantry fighting vehicles)
- First Polish PT-91 tank
This indicates a wider range of equipment being used on the front lines by Ukraine.

Air Defence Challenges
Ukraine lost a high-value S-300 air defence system recently. Analysis suggests Ukraine needs more Patriot systems to provide adequate coverage, especially in Zaporizhzhia area to prevent Russians using close air support. The US has a capability gap between Stinger MANPADS and Patriot systems. Ukraine uses a mix of short-range air defence but needs a more consistent approach.

Drone Operations and Strikes
- 2 Russian Ka-52 attack helicopters shot down by Ukraine in Bakhmut and Robotyne areas. Significant loss for Russia as crews are not easily replaced.
- HIMARS strike on Russian training ground west of Kherson, directed by Ukrainian drone deep in Russian-controlled territory. Shows devastation caused by HIMARS munitions.
- Ukrainian drones are operating extensively behind Russian lines without being taken out by air defences.
Russian Casualties and Fatalities
- New York Times reports Russia leaves bodies of killed soldiers on battlefield to avoid compensation payouts and recording deaths
- In occupied Hollivka, 20,000 deaths out of 80,000 males aged 18-50, roughly 1 in 4. Staggering figures supporting high Russian losses.
- Russian colonel discusses inability of Russian artillery to match devastating impact of US-supplied cluster munitions to Ukraine
Fires and Explosions in Russia
Two incidents reported:
- Fire in Marino district of Moscow, cause unknown
- Fire at Krasnyi Oktiabir factory in Volgograd, no casualties, cause being investigated
Kerch Bridge and Other Updates
- Kerch bridge still not fully operational with traffic jams of boats unable to pass
- Russia claims to be preparing for a major offensive in Ukraine starting October, to launch in Spring. Likely empty rhetoric given old equipment being sent to front.
- Plans for 3rd section of Kerch bridge railway to bypass damaged areas, affecting marine traffic
Notable Russian Deaths
Two high-ranking Russian officials reported dead:
- Gennady Lopirev, FSB General in prison for bribery, linked to Putin's palace. Died suddenly in hospital.
- Gennady Zhidko, Colonel General and former deputy to Shoigu, died of unknown causes (possibly cancer).
Other News
- Video of Russian remote mining vehicle that can quickly disperse mines over large areas, causing issues for Ukrainian de-mining efforts
- So-called Donetsk People's Republic holding 'kangaroo court' sentencing Azov soldiers to 24 years in prison
- BBC article detailing torture of Ukrainian POWs by Russians, including beatings, electric shocks, intimidation and lack of medical care
